Thread: I seldom post about anything personal, but I am incandescent with rage. My 4.5-year-old at school is being bullied and called names for being dusky. #colourism is a serious problem in India- she doesn't want to go to school because she was told she is "dark & scary"
This is not the first time- 6 months ago we brought this to the teacher's attention. This is one of the most expensive, private, Montessori, alternative schools in Pune. We shared a copy of @Lupita_Nyongo's Sulwe and asked the teachers to address this issue.
@Lupita_Nyongo For those who haven't read #Sulwe, it's a beautiful story about colourism in an African nation. Very similar to #India where a darker skinned person is called names. School is no longer a psychological space envrionment for my toddler and from loving school she's refusing to go.

New in print: Our @JofHumanRights article on the use of #gendered #framing by #humanrights #advocacy groups. Advocates or researchers: get free online access for a limited time! tandfonline.com/eprint/RW3NUBG…. Highlights & takeaways below. 1/13
Problem: Human rights groups use advocacy campaigns that highlight the sex &/or gender roles of victims or survivors. They do this to generate strong emotions, empathy, grab attention, mobilize. It's problematic. jstor.org/stable/3693516 @charlicarpenter. But does it work? 2/13
Research: My @WoosterPSCI colleagues Michele Leiby, Angie Bos & I examine whether gendered framing affects how individuals perceive #humanrights victims portrayed in advocacy campaigns & whether that makes it easier to mobilize consensus or action on behalf of the campaign. 3/13

Indian businesses are seriously #gendered in their product designs. Everything from furniture to cycles are made for boys and men and women and girls have to adjust. (Thread, add your experiences)
People looking for new business ideas in India, please think about office furniture for Indian women (av. height 5.3 feet. I’m a hopeful 5.0 feet). The chairs are too deep, the back ergonomically rubbish for short people and the tables are too high. My elbows hurt.
Ironically only @IKEA has a table that fit my needs in terms of height. Even a researcher friend (height 5.4ft) didn’t like any office tables on offer. Too high. I did mention this over email to @featherlitein but there was no acknowledgement of my feedback. Ignored of course.

[1/2] Today we received trove of NYC #supportivehousing interview outcome data. Here's one that stands out: "Rejected. Client presented as resistant during the interview process. Client did not engage interviewer appropriately." What does "appropriately" mean? Who judges it?
[2/2] The provider does. Is this #racialized, is it #gendered? Is this a valid reason to #gatekeep housing from a homeless person w/ mental illness in need? Social workers should not get discretion to gatekeep a basic human need w/ no accountability. Yet, here we are.
[+1] Here's another reason a homeless person struggling with mental illness was rejected from supportive housing: "Applicant was evicted from previous rental property." @NYCCouncil needs to move forward with legislation to stop this kind of gatekeeping.

Today, I will try my hand at live tweeting insights from "A #Home of One's Own", a two-day #researchworkshop on socially & economically #marginalised women's experiences of and negotiations with #genderinequalities in #informalurbanhousing in India.
This workshop has been organised by #JadavpurUniversity (School of Women's Studies), #RabindraBharathiUniversity (Centre for Women's Studies) and #Parichiti, a women's organisation. All three are research partners on a #GCRF project funded by @GoldsmithsUoL.
Since Oct 2018, I have collaborated with Dr. Henrike Donner, who is leading it, to develop #researchcollaborations with #educational and #development organisations in India to implement a pilot study on #genderurbanhousing. This workshop marks the end of the first phase.
