Salford City’s 2020/21 financial results covered a season that the club described as “unique” with the COVID pandemic leading to “extreme challenges”. Nevertheless, The Ammies’ 8th place in League Two was the best finish in their history #WeAreSalford
Salford City have been high-profile ever since the club was bought in 2014 by five of the #MUFC Class of ’92, namely Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes. Singapore businessman (and Valencia owner) Peter Lim purchased a 50% stake in September 2014.
When they acquired Salford, the club was playing in the 8th tier of English football (the Northern Premier League Division One North), but they have secured four promotions since then, reaching the Football League for the first time in 2019.
As it is the 10th anniversary of that day at Stoke, I thought I would share what happened to me that day.

After I put together a thread looking at the financial trends in the Premier League over the last 10 years from 2011 to 2020, a few people asked me if I could do the same for the EFL Championship. So here are the finances for England’s second tier over the last decade.
This analysis comes with caveats, as not all Championship clubs published accounts in the last decade, e.g. Derby County in 2019 and 2020. Also no accounts for clubs in administration, e.g. Portsmouth (2011 & 2012), Bolton Wanderers (2018 & 2019) and Wigan Athletic (2020).
Nevertheless, the themes and trends can still be highlighted, including the impact of COVID in the last three months of 2020. We will also feature some comparisons with the Premier League to illustrate the immense differences between England’s top two divisions.

#Blues have had it very tough so far. An embargo limited who could come in as they took 2 points from 11 games.
Recent form though is strong, and it’s taken them from well adrift to 1 point from safety. Not writing them off anymore...

23: Stevenage (Predicted 21st)
I don’t think I’m too far off here. 21st is just 1 point away at the minute.
Have much more faith in this #StevenageFC team than I ever did last year and whilst they lack experience up front, defensively they’ve improved significantly overall.

In July 2018 NSWE SCS, owned by billionaire businessmen Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, bought a controlling stake from Dr. Tony Xia after #AVFC “experienced significant liquidity problems”, including a missed tax payment to HMRC. Xia’s minority share bought out in August 2019.
#AVFC loss widened by £33m from £36m to £69m, as revenue dropped £14m (21%) to £54m and profit on player sales fell £5m from £16m to £11m. Operating expenses increased by £15m, while £46m promotion payments were offset by stadium sale £36m and HS2 land compensation £14m.
I recently wrote about the importance of the cash flow statement in assessing the financial performance of a football club, focusing on the Premier League. Since then I have had a few requests to do the same for the Championship, so let’s take a look in the following thread.
A club’s profit and loss account is easy to understand, i.e. basically revenue less expenses (mainly player wages), but this is a notional profit based on the accountants’ accruals concept, which can be very different from actual cash movements.
This is important, as the main reason that football clubs fail is cash flow problems. It does not matter how large your revenue is (or your profits are), if you do not have the cash to pay your players, suppliers or indeed the taxman, then you will find yourself in trouble.
