Okay, stream-of-conscious thread on liberalism, neoliberalism, politics, policy, and philosophy commencing here and going through the night. (There'll be long gaps and pauses) šŸ§µ#NeoliberalShillBracket
Liberalism is values, practices, & institutions. Usual stuff: representative government, now w/ high suffrage democracy, tho that wasn't always the case. I think at this point liberalism requires democracy and without itā€”whatever may've been once trueā€”it's not really liberalism.
Okay so rep. gov't and high suffrage democracy. Also markets; professional state bureaucracy, rule of law and a constitutional legal tradition; stable property rights and a welfare state. #NeoliberalShillBracket

Oh yeah totally, plus we have come at a very happening and tense time. We landed and heard Chapo's son had been arrested in a HUGE gun battle that killed 30. And Biden and Trudeau are here.

In fact the general opinion here is that he was arrested with the summit in mind. /1
Ovidio had been arrested years ago, and Sinaloa cartel responded by unleashing violence. Lopez-Obrador released him in 2019 to ostensibly reduce the violence. And it worked.

So this operation annoyed many common folks cos it seems designed to tout it to Biden. /2
Mexicans have a VERY different (and in my opinion correct) take on the drug war and the so called border problem than Americans.

They think the real problem isn't drugs going north but guns & dollars coming south. America has a huge appetite for drugs that are taken voluntarily.

I cannot help but be concerned at how all this reactionary response to migrants seeking #asylum in NYC has created a perfect storm of xenophobia, ego-driven political agendas & photo ops, is risking folks safety & possibly exposing them to ICE? Btw #AbolishICE 1/
I saw plently of asylum seekers when I was a shelter case manager. This is NOT a new phenomenon, though it does require an urgent response in public policy, and always has, to address access to safe, perm housing for ALL people in New York. 2/
I'm not going to give into the nasty game of meritocracy, pick-me and "I-got-next" when it comes to ending homelessness. NO ONE is more deserving of a home than the next. Needs may vary but a human right to a home should NEVER be a hierarchy. #EndHomelessness

I've always said that ICE's lawless excesses would inevitably become too big for Americans to ignore, and while that day may not be here yet this report should get us there a little faster. This goes *so* far beyond immigration enforcement

#abolishICE

americandragnet.org
You should already care that ICE constantly lies to the public and the courts about the people it rips from their families, detains in terrible conditions, and violently deports. But a lot of US citizens don't + never will, so let's say you're one of them. This report is for you
Read this paragraph, and then read it again, and then read it out loud to someone nearby and start a conversation about why an immigration agency has any right to conduct warrantless surveillance on all of us in the course of enforcing non-criminal statutes

Not just "overrated". Downright dangerous and we are still paying the price. So many of the problems in US & all over the world today can be traced back to Reagan. Even the Aryan Khan case!

He was in the right place at the right time, gets random credit for USSR collapse.
The most evil and destructive legacy of Reagan is criminalizing the possession of drugs, often with mandatory minimum sentencing disproportionately targeting minorities. And then going around the world forcing countries, including India, to criminalize drug possession too.
Most of us have grown up in a world fed on Reagan initiated alarmism about drugs. So we take it as a default that yes, if you have marijuana or cocaine or ecstasy or whatever in your possession, cops can arrest you.

Ever stopped and wondered... Why? Why is possession a "crime"?

1/6 Pablo SƔnchez, a 40 year old from Venezuela, died in ICE Custody last Friday, October, 1st. Pablo had AIDS and fled persecution seeking asylum in the US for his safety and health. Pablo was detained by CBP at Del Rƭo City, Texas Image
2/6 Pablo was forced into detention where his health quickly deteriorated due to medical neglect. ICE was fully aware of Pabloā€™s medical fragility and failed to release him so that he could obtain life-saving interventions.
3/6 Pablo died because ICE was reckless and negligent and the lack of appropriate medical care resulted in complications with acute respiratory impairment, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, pneumonia, acute renal failure, anemia and covid-19.

On the 20th anniversary of 9/11, we honor the lives lost in the attack, but we also acknowledge the thousands of lives, especially immigrants, who have been affected since.
In addition to the nearly 3,000 people who died on Sept. 11, approximately 801,000 people have been killed directly in the violence of the subsequent wars in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and elsewhere.
In the US, the violent backlash against anyone perceived as Muslim ā€”whether actually Muslim, Sikh, South Asian, or Arab ā€”has driven not only a string of attacks against these communities, but also paved way for the deplorable Muslim ban enacted in 2017.

This ruling was awful, but this interpretation from the Biden administration is actually somehow *worse.*

Tipton's order simply does not cover the thing which ICE is now saying it does, and if I know that they do too.
The Biden administration is at this point so deeply committed to mass deportation that it is making up reasons to do it
Prosecutorial discretion in removal proceedings was a fairly straightforward and not especially difficult concept during the Obama years--a time in which the govt was famously hardly soft on immigration enforcement-and all they really had to do was re-issue those guidelines

I want to tell you about Saidu Sow, who is on a deportation plane to Mauritania, a country he fled decades ago. He had been in immig. jail for 3 years. In 2018, he called me from Butler Co. Jail. He carried a file of country evidence with him, knowing this day would come.
Saidu was scared, but he's a fighter. My friend Don Sherman went to meet with him in the jail.

Saidu showed him his scars from the torture he bore in Mauritania. He said "there's no way I can go back there."

We said we'd fight with him to keep him safe.
Said was moved around Ohio immigration jails while his case played out. He had terrific pro bono attorneys from @CCSWOH + @ABLELawInc (@mariaaleote). That was his only luck.

He got his old deportation case reopened and a second chance at asylum. But that was just a formality.

If you havenā€™t heard of @MOHAVVKJOHNSON, itā€™s because @LoriLightfoot and the Chicago PD donā€™t want you to.

He was charged with aggravated battery of a ā€œpeace officerā€
While @MOHAVVKJOHNSON was charged with battery, hereā€™s what really happened, in his words:

ā€œFour to five officers grabbed me and held me against the car before they handcuffed me, and didn't tell me why. They kept yelling, 'Don't struggleā€¦ā€™ I said, 'I'm not struggling.ā€™ā€

As I leave this position I feel a heaviness that the need of legal defense that I was filling wonā€™t be there for people until the next IJC fellow starts in the fall. I remember my very first client broke down when I went to visit and do a consultation because they had written so
many letters, and made so many calls, and no one had ever responded before. Everyone is deserving of defense. My goal from the start of this fellowship has been to expand this work and I will keep on fighting and advocating for the county, and ultimately the state of Nevada to
fund pro bono attorneys for Nevadans that ICE is trying to rip apart from our community. That is, until either the federal government steps up to fund this work or we all realize as a society how to actually welcome people seeking refuge with dignity. #AbolishICE

A lot of folks may be celebrating the end of immigrant family detention centers.

We're here to tell you this simply isn't true.
sacurrent.com/the-daily/archā€¦
.@ICEgov is saying these facilities will simply become ā€œ3 day processing centersā€ for those given Notices to Appear (a charging doc initiating removal proceedings).

But we've been representing families inside of Karnes for years & can pretty much call BS on this.
For the past 3 years weā€™ve observed up close countless & frequent policy changes directly impacting the lives of people seeking safety, imprisoned by our gov't.

ICE can resume expedited removal & prolonged detention at any moment.

This is a glaring PR stunt by ICE.

The sheer bravery of detained immigrants & employees at #Irwin led to a groundbreaking complaint to the @DHSOIG on Sept. 14, 2020, putting more focus on the horrific ongoing abuse of detained immigrants & staff at #Irwin.
Since the filing of our complaint, dozens of immigrant women have stepped forward describing the
gynecological abuse they too have faced at the hands of @ICEgov and @LaSalleCorr while detained at
#Irwin.

As we fight to #AbolishICE & #AbolishPrisons, we continue the call for the immediate release of ALL detained folks at #Irwin & elsewhere, accountability from ICE, LaSalle Corrections, & reparations to folks impacted by the physical & emotional trauma of detention & incarceration.

1/ Let's talk about a few small but vital parts of the #USCitizenshipAct which may not make the kinds of headlines a pathway to citizenship does, but could make millions of people's lives better the day it passes.
2/ Before we do that, it is very important to me that you understand just how *bad* Joe Biden's immigration record is. It is not at all unfair to say that he is directly responsible for some of the worst stuff that this bill is only now undoing.

jacobinmag.com/2019/04/joe-biā€¦
3/ Let's start with the definition of the word "conviction."

Every state has some form of alternative sentencing designed to divert charges & keep people from the lifetime burden of a criminal record.

Congress (& Biden) didn't like this, and changed federal law accordingly.

Save yourself a click: it's "alien." The word is alien.

"Alien" is a 700-yr-old word good only for an imm. system based in 19th-century thinking. It is etymologically rooted in otherness, ideologically predicated in suspicion, & legally useless. Kill it

cnn.com/2021/01/21/polā€¦
"Alien" doesn't just mean someone who is not a U.S. citizen. It very literally emphasizes strangeness. Otherness. Not belonging.

I'd prefer to use "non-citizen" for the same reason that Robert Law would prefer that @axios use "former Trump official" instead of "sociopath" ImageImage
Take this @CBP story from a few days ago about the rescue of "aliens in distress," including an "alien female trapped in thick vegetation." This kind of language fuels the industrialized world's largest, cruelest, & least humane law enforcement agency.

1/ I just listened to the complete record of a case in which an #immigrationjudge denied an #asylum claim for a gay ICE detainee from El Salvador, and it is an absolutely textbook model of why we need appointed counsel in deportation proceedings. Keep reading for the lowlights.
2/ This man came to the US in '89 after yrs of persecution on account of his sexuality. As if threats he was getting from gang members who bullied him with homophobic slurs almost daily weren't enough, he was also afraid of an abusive partner. An uncle was killed for being gay
3/ Once he came to the US, he found love, community, and a chance at being able to live openly as who he is. He never looked back. He had legal status for most of the time he was in the US, and only a minor misdemeanor relating to disorderly conduct.

šŸšØ BREAKING: Thanks to efforts with @MPower_Change, @SAALTweets, and the 2,600+ of you who took action...

ā€¼ļø MR. F IS FREE ā€¼ļø

It's been a cruel 243 days of his incarceration.

@ICEgov's actions proved yet again that our immigration system was built on Islamophobia. šŸ§µšŸ‘‡šŸ½
Let's clarify that ICE has full discretion to release detained folks at ANY time.

Yet, they keep folks imprisoned under false claims, coding their anti-Blackness & Islamophobia into the language of "danger for community" or "threat to national security" like they did w/ Mr. F.
It's inhumane to have incarcerated Mr. F for 243 days. He missed his child's birth, his dietary needs weren't met, and his health was deteriorating.

Prisons, jails, and detention centers are always a public health crisis, but especially when #COVID19 is ravaging through them.
