Unrest in #Yunnan south west #China over the weekend after reported moves by the government to demolish a mosque. Large numbers of riot police clashed with local Hui Muslims. Najiaying now said to be sealed off, with the internet cut there.

A key point of tension in recent years has come from the “de-Arabisation” of mosques in #China. Some mosques have been completely demolished and others refashioned to have a more Chinese design. I’m not sure what the plan is in this case.

2) #followtheelephants A quick recap. The journey actually began in March 2020, when 16 wild Asian elephants left the XiShuangBanNa National Reserve and began their journey north. In July, the pack was observed in Pu'er City and caused 1 death in Simao district.
3) #followtheelephants In Dec. 2020, the pack moved north to Mojiang Co., and here the pack added a baby elephant. On April 16, 2021, the 17 elephants moved to Yuanjiang Co. On the 24th, 2 elephants turned South toward Mojiang Co.

According to the authorities, after evidence of the contamination in Ruili, they ordered a lockdown of the border town in Yunnan province and mass tests of the population. Nobody has been allowed to enter or leave the small town since Monday evening.
The residents were asked to stay at home. Except for grocery stores and pharmacies, all stores had to close. Each of the more than 210,000 residents of Ruili will now be tested for the novel corona virus, the authorities said. Since the corona virus was introduced from Myanmar,
