🧵 1/4 Many of you will have seen articles recently with @wlrfm @WaterfordNS @KKPeopleNews on the future of the Barrow Bridge on the #Wexford to #Waterford rail line. @IrishRail have announced that the bridge will be pinned open due to a ship collision in Feb 2022
2/4 The bridge is an engineering marvel (almost 1/2 a mile long) that has functioned since 1906 - this video from @tidesntales gives you an idea of its scale and the opening & closing mechanism Several trains crossed the bridge in 2022 (after the accident) 
3/4 @IrishRail stated they will commence repair work on the bridge once compensation has been received from the ship's insurer. However, this has happened before. In 1991 a similar bridge strike occurred. The matter was with the High Court until 2001! A full decade!

The draft Waterford Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy #WMATS is currently open to public consultation til July 12. Buried in it is an analysis of a commuter rail network for Waterford - 3 trains an hour Carrick-on-Suir-Rosslare, Waterford-New Ross & 2 per hr Kilkenny-Waterford
@TFIupdates omitted #Wexford Town from this model, despite it being on the rail line and included as a major trip generator as part of their regional analysis. But that's not the main problem with this model/analysis.

A big theme in my speeches across Western US is the formative impact that Irish people & those of Irish descent have had in shaping modern day Western US. This is very true in #SanFrancisco where there is huge Irish heritage & where we have a vibrant @GlobalIrish community today!
Around 11% of the Bay Area is of Irish descent & there is a large Irish born community too. The people to people connections between the region & Ireland are very strong as evidenced by multiple sister city connections: @sfgov & @corkcitycouncil; @CityofSanJose & @DubCityCouncil
@SantaClaraCity & @LimerickCouncil are sister cities, as are @CityofMenloPark & @GalwayCityCo! Quick shout out to Kathy Watanabe @Carunningmom, the Vice Mayor of Santa Clara with proud #Roscommon heritage. Here’s me meeting with Mayor @LisaGillmor & Kathy earlier this year.
I suppose we can safely say that now #TheFrighteners have been so successfully and publicly put on a certain sector their combined angst will spew a diarrhoea of spin & warp whilst trying to use THAT VERY THING to generate $£Es Some with automated AdTech software already bought.
2/ Some bought by gormless companies, by mistake, some in full knowledge or partial knowledge of what it could do. It will be interesting as time goes on to see who apparently DIDN'T CARE about the likely instigation of its more negative 'dark' capabilities looking to 'side-step'
3/ or even 'wrong-foot' Irish & EU regulation standards, & possibly law. This too is a kind of #climatechange & #ClimateAction in itself, a would be mammoth untouchable iceberg of 'dominion' & 'control' being melted out into an ocean of citizens' scrutiny & advancement for change
