It is #IrishHeritageMonth & #StPatricksDay!

Canada's 1st St. Patrick's Day parade was held in Montreal in 1824. It has been held every year since then, except during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is predated by only the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade.

St. Patrick's Day parades were soon held in Toronto, although those stopped in 1878. For several years previous, violence erupted at the parades between Catholics and Protestants.
The parade didn't officially return to Toronto until 1988.

In Saint John, NB, Saint Patrick's Day is a week-long celebration, followed by the JP Collins Celtic Festival which celebrates the city's Irish heritage. It is named for Dr. James Collins who helped sick Irish immigrants at the quarantine station before he died there.

Today is #StPatricksDay! Did you know that Che Guevara’s family origins are Irish? 👇 Image
The Guevara family’s Irish origins can be traced to early 18th century Galway, where Che’s great-great-great-great-grandfather, Patrick Lynch, was born. In an interview with Che’s father, he said “the first thing to note is that in my son’s veins flowed the blood of Irish rebels” Image
As a white-skinned Argentinean descended from local nobility on his mother’s side, Che lived among the more privileged ranks of his country’s class- and race-conscious society. Image

Happy #StPatricksDay! This festival from the tiny island of Ireland is celebrated in almost every major city across the globe, here’s why 👇
The Irish diaspora numbers approx. 70 million people, compared to the population of Ireland which today is just 5 million. This is a direct legacy of what is commonly known as the Potato Famine. The more accurate translation of the Irish “An Gorta Mór” is the Great Hunger.
Between 1845-1952 the Great Hunger became the greatest human disaster in 19th century Europe and was engineered by England’s policy of under-developing Ireland and preventing it from industrializing.

On #StPatricksDay, we remember the Irish socialist, feminist, and revolutionary politician, Constance Markievicz, also known as the “rebel countess,” who dedicated her life to the Irish struggle for independence and became one of the first woman ministers in all of Europe.
In 1916, she fought against the British occupiers during the Easter Rebellion, as a Second-in-Command in the Irish Citizen Army, and was put into solitary confinement soon after. She was first sentenced to death, then given a life sentence instead, but was released a year later.
2 years later, she became Minister of Labour in the revolutionary Irish government. Through the political turmoil that followed in the 1920s, Markievicz continued her activism and rebellious activities, fighting for Irish independence and the rights of the working class and poor.

Pre-pandemic, I had the chance to travel widely across the US, visiting nearly forty of the fifty states. Alongside political, economic & community contacts, I always called into a College, many of which had fantastic Irish studies programs. A thread on US-Irish educational ties.
Having written several books on Irish history & literature, I've enjoyed the chance to speak with students at over 30 🇺🇸 universities, including @GUGlobalIrish & @GIHNYU, that have #IrishStudies programs. They're connected through @ACIrishStudies, a close partner of the Embassy.
At least 2 🇺🇸 universities have campuses in 🇮🇪. @NDIrishStudies has a base @unddublin on #MerrionSquare and in #Connemara @UNDKylemore. @BCDublin is based on #StephensGreen. Both schools also offer opportunities for their students to intern in Ireland.

“Unlike chattel slavery, Irish indentured servitude was neither hereditary nor lifelong; unlike black slaves, Irish servants had rights; unlike black slaves, indentured servants weren't property.”

NO, THE IRISH WERE NOT SLAVES TOO

Historian Liam Hogan has spent the last six years debunking the Irish slave myth.

The @WhiteHouse was one of hundreds of landmarks across America to turn green for #StPatricksDay. As is well known, the building. was designed by Kilkenny architect James Hoban. But this is far from the only Irish imprint on the DC landscape. A short thread on a long history. Image
Walk into the @bankofireland in Parliament House & you might be reminded of the @uscapitol. The ceiling of what's now Statuary Hall resembles Parliament House because Sir Edward Lovett Pearce's plans were closely studied when designing the Capitol. ImageImage
The oldest Catholic church in Washington DC, St Patrick's, was established in 1794 to serve the Irish-American stonemasons who were building the @WhiteHouse and @uscapitol. Like @POTUS @JoeBiden, the founding priest Fr Caffrey was a proud Mayo man! Image

Have you ever heard of the “Emerald Isle of the Caribbean”? Montserrat is the only place outside of Ireland to celebrate #StPatricksDay as a national holiday. They celebrate it over a 10 day period. 1/
Most Montserratians are of Irish descent & have Irish surnames. The passport stamp is a shamrock. Catholics fled there to escape rel persecution in the 1600s. The Irish were a varied group of wealthy landowners & indentured servants. They brought enslaved Africans too. 2/
While the indentured Irish could work their way to land ownership & rights after seven years, enslaved Africans could not. Since many of the slave owners were Irish, the enslaved ppl picked St. Patrick’s Day in 1678 to revolt. They figured the slavers would be drunk as usual. 3/

Lots of commentary in my timeline tonight from UK on EU vaccine problems but just one @DavidHenigUK drawing attention to speech by Dominic Raab in Aspen US today-blaming EU for problems in Irish Sea which is essentially blaming Ireland for said problems @BrigidLaffan @FCDOGovUK
2. @TomMcTague you asked if EU would use its sovereignty re. Irish Sea Border but you might also ask why a UK Foreign Secretary is marking speeches blaming EU for U.K. choices on #StPatricksDay in US. Blaming EU is blaming Dublin @BrigidLaffan
3. The only way to address the consequences of a hard Brexit <UK choice>for Island of Ireland is intensive engagement between all of the actors concerned. Blaming the EU for a sovereignty first Brexit & Ireland for protecting its interests does not cut the mustard #StPatricksDay

THREAD ⚠ Effective 12:01 am March 13, the Avalon region will move to Alert Level 4 and areas outside the Avalon will move to Alert level 3.
2️⃣ We must be mindful that while our provincial epidemiology is in a very good place, the same cannot be said outside the province. We therefore remain at risk of importation of the virus and the variants of concern that are now in greater circulation.
3️⃣ We saw first-hand how rapidly the B117 variant spread in our province. That’s why we must ease restrictions slowly. We will closely monitor the epidemiology as we open to ensure that there is no increased transmission.

Every year on March 17, the president celebrates #StPatricksDay, a holiday honoring the death of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Here is a thread of past presidential celebrations.
On March 17, 1980, President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter hosted a Saint Patrick's Day party. Guests were entertained with songs and readings from Irish literature in the East Room.
