#UBI is becoming increasingly popular. You can explain it in a tweet or on the back of a postage stamp.

It solves a problem of not enough money. But it's the wrong solution. The problem is a distribution problem. Regressive taxation, laws that favour rentier wealth extraction, capital over labour, de-funding and privatising public services, remove wealth from the lower percentiles. 
If you give everyone a small amount of money you do not solve a money shortage problem, you feed a distribution problem.
Even those well intentioned, well motivated self employed types to whom the UBI appeals so much will find that the reality does not live up to the dream.

Give everyone N95s to deal with poor air quality from wildfires, & reduce Covid infections. Reinstate mask mandates in healthcare settings. Quickly transition away from fossil fuels. Plant lots of trees & hemp. End poverty with a substantial UBI, & provide good healthcare to all.
Lots of moving parts in this thread but I hope people will find it useful in understanding the #4IR, or Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Remarkably good economics from @BBCNewsnight Ben Chu. My view is that on the revenue side, the policies should include 1) freezing personal allowances, 2) raising the 45% tax rate to 50% and reduce the level at which it is paid from £150K to £100K,
3) merging income & capital gains tax to income tax allowances and rates, 4) removing #NonDom status, 5) promising immediate action to identify beneficial ownership of UK assets, 6) setup Committees to consider the benefits of #UBI & #WealthTax ,and
7) announce that @hmtreasury will support more transparency & coordination in UK policymaking.

If you say "Just jump through this hoop to get this," no matter how easy you think it is, there will be people you really think need and deserve the reward who won't succeed, and may not even try. Just give everyone what you think some need, and tax it back from those who dont.
A frustratingly common response to #UBI is why provide it to the rich instead of picking some line like $150k and excluding those above that line? The answer is because that will end up excluding *MANY* of those earning under $12k who can't afford to prove they don't earn $150k.
Stop worrying so much about Bezos getting an extra $12k. It means nothing to him. It means nothing to the economy if he gets it. Focus on ways of effectively increasing his taxes more than $12k so he isn't a net recipient. There are lots of ways to do this.

What do I mean? Well the #OW Act of 1997 defines ‘assistance’ as “life stabilization assistance and basic financial assistance” - no matter how you look at it, stabilization =/= thriving, living, equitable. It’s an interim fix to a structural failure.

So shortly after the Senedd election the Welsh Government announced they would be conducting a pilot of UBI.

Sir Michael Marmot started off talking about life expectancy. Work in the Americas showed life expectancy increase with the average income per person. But that this wasn't the case in the USA. It's not just about money above a threshold, it's what you can do with the money. 2/7
He talked about cash transfers & evidence that generally giving poor people money is good for their health. But that cash transfers (and some "basic income" pilots) differ from #BasicIncome as money comes with conditions or is paid to a target group rather than universally. 3/7
