Brand new study. Same old result. Unconditional income didn't reduce people's labor force participation.

A 🧵 of key takeaways from the final results of the @stocktondemo of #BasicIncome published yesterday:

✅No negative impact on work
✅Income volatility down
✅Mental health improved
✅Less fatigued
✅Improved physical functioning
✅More bargaining power

Pre-pandemic, employment increased quite a bit in the basic income group, but the increase did not remain significant during the pandemic. It's possible that this and other non-significant results were due to unexpected attrition by the end of the experiment. (more on that later) Image
Income volatility was another measure that decreased significantly pre-pandemic, but did not remain significant, as did psychological distress. People in the basic income group moved from "likely to have a mental health disorder" to "likely to be well" in year one, pre-Covid. Image

A thread…

This video has been making the rounds on Twitter.

This is @MichaelFordTO - Minister of Multiculturalism and nephew of @fordnation…highlighting the 900 people of Indian heritage that currently live in Ontario.

#onpoli

1/
900. Nine. Zero. Zero.
In Ontario.

A quick google search indicates over 750,000 people of Indian heritage in the province. It took about 30 secs to find that info.

One would think the Minister of Multiculturalism would have access to the same info I have.

#onpoli

2/
All jokes aside…this is emblematic of the @fordnation govt in so many ways.

We see a minister who is woefully unqualified put in a position simply because of who he’s related to…ineptitude rewarded by nepotism…classic Doug Ford.

Yet this is just the veneer.

What is the Welsh #BasicIncome Pilot?

In July 2022 the @WelshGovernment launched the Basic Income for Care Leavers in Wales Pilot. It offers £1,600 (pre-tax) a month for 2 years to eligible care leavers who turn 18 between July 2022 and June 2023 -
Participation in the pilot is voluntary and unconditional, those taking part will also receive individual advice and support to help them manage their finances and develop their financial and budgeting skills

California has announced a series of #BasicIncome pilot projects, including one that will provide $750 per month to young adults leaving the foster care system.
This is a good idea. Here’s why. 🧵
cdss.ca.gov/Portals/13/Pre…
First, though, this obviously isn’t a true UBI. And it’s not going to tell us much of value about how a permanent, large-scale UBI would work. For a helpful discussion of the limits of pilots, see this excellent book by @KarlWiderquist.

link.springer.com/book/10.1007/9…
But that’s fine. This is a good program, whether or not it gets us any closer to a UBI. Young adults leaving the foster system are an extremely vulnerable population: more likely to spend time in jail, more likely to wind up homeless. They need help, and this program provides it.

To be a #PWD in this time of turmoil during the creation of #C22 is a complex and emotional rollercoaster of events. A nation of ppl truly affected by the outcome are watching every single moment, working to be apart of the process, hoping to have their input. A🧵
There is nothing in the Bill which brings real comfort and trust in the system. That ultimately is the truth, as I see it. Call me a pessimist if you want to, but the truth is, as I see it- this needs to be wholly rewritten and expedited. It needs to call for accountability.
Some of the questions asked during the committee meeting were astonishingly crude. Able-bodied folk, imagine this scenario: you’re in constant pain, you’re either unable to see or hear or move or swallow, or any combination thereof; and the BIG question on the frontline is…

Tuesday is coming. It’s going to be a big day in the #HoC for #PWD and for the right reasons. Big reasons. @BonitaZarrillo has been a big supporter of Bill C-22 which will help the lives of Canadians with Disabilities all over the country. There are many unanswered questions. A🧵
To say that @CQualtro has her hands full with this is the understatement of the year. She’s endured big time scrutiny and for all the right reasons. #PWD are legitimately going to #MAiD bc of poverty situations. So why hasn’t this been a bigger deal? We can say whatever we want.
From “the gov’t doesn’t care” to “the money has to come from somewhere”. The fact is: these reasons are bogus reasons to put ppl in such compromising positions that they’re willing to turn to state-sanctioned suicide. ESPECIALLY when other legislation passed so fast in order

Saturday Storytime...

As some followers know, I represented public servants including at ODSP where my job was for over a decade. I started getting 'in the room' around the same time as the Poverty Reduction Act, 2009 came into force. That unit came to our meetings to brief...
The main point of the Act required a target and a metric. Then programs got tagged for how they help meet the target. Ontario had no target and the prior government had gutted services. The Act made some sense. Without a goal and metric it is hard to measure pass or fail.
In comes the Poverty Reduction team to brief. They are really excited, and nice. They do the PowerPoint then we got to ask questions. Standard stuff. I ask why isn't it the Poverty Elimination Strategy, genuinely not to throw shade. They say the Act is about targets & reporting.

🧵 The final #BasicIncomeConversation Research Network Seminar with @MichaelMarmot, @ProfKEPickett and @MTJohnsonUBI is well worth a watch.

It's now up on YouTube to watch back. Take a look at the potential health impacts of #BasicIncome 👇 1/7
Sir Michael Marmot started off talking about life expectancy. Work in the Americas showed life expectancy increase with the average income per person. But that this wasn't the case in the USA. It's not just about money above a threshold, it's what you can do with the money. 2/7
He talked about cash transfers & evidence that generally giving poor people money is good for their health. But that cash transfers (and some "basic income" pilots) differ from #BasicIncome as money comes with conditions or is paid to a target group rather than universally. 3/7

most crime is not a something we should fight from the top down but eliminate from the bottom up via assuring a society where needs are provided for; acts of desperation will be drastically reduced..

The Liberals are scamming disabled folx on twitter & Canadians deserve to know 🚨

I knew there was something up with this organization after I had to correct them yesterday in a post. Their entire organization, including their website is based on a Liberal lie.
1/
Now to find out its ran by a non-disabled person and has practically no-one in it on social assistance?

And to find it's by one of (the Liberal's Minister of "Disability Inclusion") @CQualtro's cronies from her team, I am not shocked at the least.

2/
Liberals made this organization to scam disabled Canadians into voting Liberal.

The benefit is a Liberal falsehood that died in the HoC.

But the Liberals still want you to think that the imaginary dangled carrot is still there - so you'll vote for them. They'll do nothing. 3/

Over 10 years after the 2-year universal basic income pilot ended in Namibia, this follow-up report has been published. It includes interviews with recipients, like this one with Josef Ganeb, a bricklayer, whose business flourished during the #UBI pilot.

bignam.org/Publications/B…
Rudolphine Eigowas is a dressmaker and her business flourished too but when the pilot ended, problems born of money scarcity returned.

"I just want that they bring back the BIG, the whole Namibia must get the BIG - the problems are not only here - the whole Namibia must get it!”
Christian Swartbooi repaired shoes during the pilot. Over ten years later his eyesight prevents him from continuing that work and he wishes #BasicIncome would return.

“BIG was working.” His wife, Crecia, continues: “With the BIG we never had to suffer, but now we are suffering.”

I don't normally discuss the price of crypto.

I need to discuss the price of crypto.

Depending on how response is to this thread, I may write a longer-form piece for the @Mattereum blog tomorrow, so lets see how it goes.

A mix of hard truths and bright horizons. Here goes.
So I joined the story way off to the left of this graph. Two years to the left of it. Bitcoin was $500 or so in 2014.

This is *prehistory*. At the time, I was working in a military think tank on managing natural disasters and cyber risk. files.howtolivewiki.com/cyber/Defense_… from those days.
Now, why does a medium-grade defense intellectual quit to go into crypto. The short answer is "I needed a job that paid better than think tanks" but why did I take *that* job, with the Ethereum Foundation? blog.ethereum.org/2015/03/03/eth…

The answer is, I wanted to change the world.

Even though I haven't been a big fan of Twitter threads so far, a lot of people I know have made 100-tweet threads for @threadapalooza so I thought I'll give it a try as well. I will start with #APIs and hopefully end up connecting them with the #FutureOfWork. Let's go ...

🧵⬇️
First of all, when I talk about #APIs, I mean HTTP-based interfaces connecting apps and backend servers as well as different services with each other. For now, the technical details, such as whether they use REST, GraphQL, gRPC etc., shall not matter. (1/100)
When humans interact with computers they require a user interface (UI), and when machines interact with each other they need application programming interfaces (APIs). At the end of the day, however, these have to be implemented by humans. Good #APIDesign considers both. (2/100)

We need a 0% tax rate for the first $40,000 in income.
(for individuals, $80,000 for households)
This is necessary (as we start yet another economic downturn) and achievable (given our nation's culture of opposing taxes).
