🎉 I presented MATEO, a tool for effortless #MT evaluation! It received an overwhelming response from researchers, users, and industry, validating my belief that improving accessibility to #opensource #evaluation methods fills a need. Check it out here: lt3.ugent.be/mateo/
The project funding (thank you @EAMTee and @CLARINERIC!) is ending this month but I've had the pleasure to talk to many engaging people to keep the project alive in an #openscience manner for the foreseeable future. All contributions and ideas are welcome! github.com/BramVanroy/mat…

And if you want to take the brain-boost to the next level, don't just learn another oral language, but a #SignLanguage! 🤟

Forget about two-dimensional, linear word strings. 😉

Challenge your brain with a language in 3D, including a totally different word order & grammar.
Experience for yourself how difficult it is* ** to consciously produce specific facial expressions, and to switch between personae when rendering a dialogue.

Realise how poor your visual perception & spatial visualization ability are* **. 🙈

*for a hearing person
**at first
Can you imagine a language in which posture is key?

In which, depending on the type of question you want to ask, you either raise or lower your eyebrows?

And that in some sentences, you need to lean slightly forward, then backward in order for your grammar to be correct?

Hello! I've been doing a bit of British Sign Language #BSL / Sign Supported English #SSE tutoring. I've been doing one to ones but would anyone be interested in a fun small group, total beginners zoom class? I am #hardofhearing and use SSE alongside my hearing aids🦻🏼
(2/3) 🦻🏼
I am not fluent in #britishsignlanguage but I took my first (level 1) exam as a teen in 2002 when I began to first experience hearing loss, did more in 2006, then 2016, & most recently this lockdown. So have been steadily building my use of #bsl most of my adult life!

There are lots of reasons to learn #signlanguage even if you don't know anyone with #hearingloss. Sign with babies, with SEN folk, for your CV, to make your business more accessible & because it is genuinely fun! If you might be interested @ me and RTs are appreciated ❤️

My biggest challenge is to ensure that affected people are treated with compassion, and not stigmatized. - Health Minister @drharshvardhan

Let us take special care in ensuring that we empathize with and provide support to people and families infected with #COVID19.

We need to reach out to those people who are afraid to come forward & seek #COVID19 treatment because of the stigma we have attached. Delayed treatment due to the stigma & fear is costing us precious lives.

How to defeat #Stigma in the #FightAgainstCoronavirus?

1. They are people, not victims/cases

2. Don't disclose info about affected people

3. Rely on authentic sources (@MoHFW_INDIA /@WHO etc)

4. Share positive stories

5. Respect #CoronaWarriors

In the early part of the first millennium CE, the #IndoEuropean language known as Proto-#Germanic diverged into an East branch (which included #Gothic) and a Northwest branch.

Northwest then split into West and North branches when Proto-#Norse developed in #Scandinavia. Image
Until the 8th century, #Germanic #languages, including Proto-#Norse, were written in Elder Futhark, the earliest #runic #alphabet.

The name #Futhark comes from the initial phonemes in the names of the first six #runes:
ᚠ ᚢ ᚦ ᚨ ᚱ ᚲ
F U Þ A R K

By the beginning of the #Viking Age around 800 CE, Proto-#Norse had evolved into Old Norse, and #Scandinavia's writing system transitioned from the 24 #runes of Elder #Futhark to Younger Futhark's 16 runes.

The #Swedish #Sparlösa #Runestone from ~800 CE features both #alphabets. Image
