Blue whales can be found off the coast of SoCal during the summer months and are in search of krill! How wild is it that the biggest animal on Earth feeds almost entirely on one of the tiniest? They can eat 6 tons in a day. #BlackMammalogistsWeek #SeaMammalSaturday 
Blue whales are baleen whales, they do not have teeth. Instead they have many plates of baleen that help filter out krill from the water. Imagine having a giant mustache in your mouth instead of teeth, and you've got the idea!
In the photos here the whales are lunge feeding at the surface. They open their mouths really wide (you can see their ventral pleats expand to let more water in) and sift out their food.
