It’s been a long and heavy night. So I won’t stay on too much longer. But on the topic of outreach: meet your target audience where they are #scicomm
Work with existing groups. Don’t reinvent the wheel. Work with after school programs, go to Black and Brown neighborhoods, work in under resourced classrooms. #Outreach #scicomm
Justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) in STEM starts with children and their families in your own town. Ask yourself: Where does your outreach actually teach #BlackMammalogists Image

Why mammals?

My mom is a teacher, so during summers she would take my siblings and I to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park (formerly SD Animal Park). Because we were only about 40 min from either park, we were there almost weekly. Plus it tires kids out. #BlackMammalogists
The San Diego Zoo was my Disneyland. As a small kid, I loved visiting and learning facts about every mammal. A lot of kids want to become veterinarians, well I wanted to be a zoo veterinarian. Or a zoo keeper. Any career that would put me closer these glorious mammals.
But. How does a person even become a zoo keeper? I never found any answers as a kid, and I never saw any keepers who looked like me, so I eventually abandoned that idea. I still loved mammals, but I was usually told, if you like science, study medicine. #RepresentationMatters

So I want to introduce you all to Kyle Reid!! He is a PhD student and part of the #blackmamfam I asked him what he wanted to share with y'all and this is what he said! #weouthere #blackmammalogists
I'm Kyle Reid, I'm a 3rd Year Ph.D. student born and raised on the Southside of Chicago. I'm doing research to help conservation scientists protect endangered bat species. I'm working on projects on pallid bats in Baja California, Jamaican Flower Bats in Jamacia, and

After I graduated from university I went to work with American Prairie Reserve in Montana and learn more about being a land management NGO!! If you ever get the chance to go there I highly recommend it @AmericanPrairie if you want to learn more go follow @DanielKinka
Whilst on the prairie I did all sorts of things! Conversed with guests, led tours, prepared the lodge for guests, did logistical things like taking guests to different accommodations across the reserve and delivering supplies where they were needed
I also got to help USFWS on their Black Footed Ferret/Prairie dog study in the Charles M Russell Wildlife Management Refuge! It was a dream to get to work to help protect ferrets! #blackmammalogists

So then I was into my final year of my degree at Manchester...still more classes and also a final year project! I got matched up with a paleobiologist and I thought WHATTT am I going to do...I like mammals!! So off I went to hit the books and figure out how I could do a paleo
project with mammals and more importantly...carnivores!! So I ended up studying carnivoran skull morphology and dentition! which meant I got to go to a lot of museums!!
It was a really great opportunity to learn more about taxonomy and although the actual software I had to use was challenging I managed to complete the project and my degree with a first! All the trade offs that I made, all the stress about $$$ and grades in the end worked out

So for my placement year I moved to Nelson, BC and was an intern for the ministry of forests, lands and natural resource operations!! I worked for a grizzly bear biologist and the species at risk biologist in our office. This was the most important thing I have ever done!
Did I move to Nelson because I wanted to snowboard in addition to studying bears? Yes! Did it work out? Yes! So I was stoked. Within a month of my arrival I was designing and carrying out a project with a threatened amphibian population in SE BC!!
Amphibians?! What is a #BlackMammalogist doing working with frogs? Well...I still couldn't tell you but they were part of the workload of the species at risk biologist so there I was, working with frogs and doing nighttime surveys in a wetland!

So how did I end up here? After wanting to be a vet for the longest time I realised that 1) I did not have the people skills to deal with pet owners and 2) I was actually not that great at chemistry...or so I thought when I was in school! Vet school, at least in the UK
Also requires you to do 6 weeks of work experience. I did 2 with vets that I knew but this also required my mum to be available to drop me off and pick me up at the vets office everyday and we lived outside of town...so this was a big undertaking even for 2 weeks!
I wanted to be a wildlife vet and I realised that the number of successful wildlife vets was actually pretty small and junior vets who work in small animal practice are actually not paid very much compared to the extensive time they are in school
