The #ICA23-PostCon about #SciCom was great. One random stranger took this picture of our happy group, but she is not the only person to thank. (1/9) A group of people in front ...
The fine people @UofT’s John M. Kelly Library were great (spontaneous!) hosts for our group. When we had to quickly find a room, they willingly opened the door to us (with @JohnBesley paving the way). (2/9)
Organizing this post-conference was a group effort with @msc_lab’s staff: @Malarija, @pgiuliav, @JL_Egelhofer, and yours truly – thus putting @VolkswagenSt’s efforts in supporting #scicomm to good work. (3/9)

With all the rage about ChatGPT, have you ever wondered about the differences between AI and more classical technologies? Join me for a brief tour, with its relation to Aerospace. @RedDivulga, @filarramendi, @uc3m y @doctoradoUC3M.  @PhDAaeroUC3M #PhD #Aerospace #Engineering
ChatGPT, and its equivalents work like buttonsmashing. You have a bajillion buttons, and them you mash, tweak, and tune them randomly. Like this young Alien Stu is doing in the Pixar short movie Lifted.
Stu is trying to learn how to abduct humans. I know, a very Aerospace oriented scenario. Consider him as Chatgpt in its beginnings. He pushes random buttons, and not surprisingly, nothing really works. However, the more he tries, the more he learns the buttons

I spent my getting-ready morning time listening to the @Ologies episode on tortoises with @biophiliamanda. A couple of observations. 1/n #ologies #sciencecommunication #appliedlearning #fieldwork
@Ologies @biophiliamanda First: Tortoises. Tortoises are turtles, and I love turtles. Once, in Australia, while snorkeling off @LadyElliotGBR, I saw sea turtle and started following her and when she finally dove too deep for me to follow I surfaced and realized that while I could not see the boat 2/n
@Ologies @biophiliamanda ... I could see my now-husband, who COULD see the boat, and had followed me, knowing I was on some hyper-focused lack-of-self-preservation quest. (Choose your partners well!) Back to Ologies, though. 3/n

I’m studying immersive virtual reality and instructional design. Here’s what I learned from Makransky and Petersen’s (2021) paper entitled The cognitive-affective model of immersive learning (CAMIL). #instructionaldesign bit.ly/3HUMMPr
- A thread -
This is an attempt to communicate science on Twitter using threads. #sciencecommunication 🤓
When it comes to immersive virtual reality (IVR) and learning, the CAMIL theory identifies specific affordances of learning in immersive virtual environments. CAMIL stands for Cognitive Affective Model of Immersive Learning (CAMIL).

Pensyarah kerap dianggap sbg the quintessential golongan keje makan gaji. Hanya lecturing, research, supervise students.. gaji masuk. Tp tahukah anda sebenarnya golongan pensyarah antara paling aktif buat side hustle for extra income? And no not jual Tupperware or drive Grab.
🧵
Let me spill the tea on how we lecturers earn our side income.

A caveat - ramai je lecturers yg tak buat the stuff below and live happily within their means. And those yang buat pun, it's not so much about the money, but the opportunity for career development,...
..the passion to contribute, and the independence afforded to lecturers to manage our own time. Surprisingly I see little of this culture in other job sectors (I might be wrong though).

Anyway, here we go!

Chatted with @schmidtwriting for his new @undarkmag article on the traps and dangers of advocating for an investigation into potential lab origins of covid-19. #laborigins #OriginsofCOVID
I think this piece by Charles @schmidtwriting was particularly well written because of how balanced it is. There were parts that I didn't like and had to grapple with. A lot has happened in the last year since I started looking into the evidence surrounding the #OriginsofCOVID
It comes at a time when the WHO-China team is expected to release their full report in the coming week(s). And @JamieMetzl and ~two dozen scientists (me too!) have posted a letter in the @WSJ pointing out major major flaws in the WHO-China not-an-investigation joint mission.

Thanks to @kimbiddulph it’s #Archaeology31 time again! - Starting with prompt number one: #new.

Which in this case is: New year, new journal. Empty pages waiting to be filled with thoughts, notes, sketches ... opportunities. Image
#Archaeology31 day 2, #future, offers a great chance to highlight a topic I found particularly interesting as of late:

How will an #ArchaeologyOfTheFuture look like - What do *we* leave behind for future colleagues?

(Weekend reading recommendations included. 😉) Image
Starting with the question what actually constitutes #CulturalHeritage, #sites, and #monuments of our age ...

(#Archaeology31, 2. #future)

This 🧵 is going to be a glossary to cover some terms that I am going to use this week. I'll add to it during the week if I forget any today and feel free to add your own below if I've missed any you think are important!
What is a screen reader?

It is assistive technology that can be used by the visually impaired, visually/hearing impaired (d/Deaf) or those with dyslexia & other cognitive disabilities. It converts text documents either from text to voice or from text to braille.
What is alt text (alternative text)?
It is a text description of an image, graphic, gif or similar visual material that allows screen-readers to interpret & describe them. If you don't include alt text then a screen-reader can't interpret the image. It says 'image' & moves on.

As #bioinformatician #biostatistician #DataScientist, have you ever felt you've done lots of work, yet achieved nothing? here is how to change that! A thread 👇 1/n
1 - #document rigorously your computing work - same as bench scientists do on experiments. Document your initial thoughts on data, your decisions, tests, issues, how you solved them, how you tried various tools, how you picked one over others. These are all *achievements*. n/1
2 - #track your tasks and efforts - make it quantitative. Write a weekly checklist on GitHub wiki; update and check it off at the end of a day. Version control your codes; push meaningful commits. Be aware of your time spent on each task. Numbers may be boring, but effective. 2/n

Hi #AcademicTwitter
The science of #ScienceCommunication is a thing. This means there r scientists who study what r the best ways to communicate science, to engage the public, change attitude & behavior, excite ppl abt #science & more. Here r some of those ppl:
#scicomm
@brossardd is professor and chair @UW_LSC/@UWMadison
She studies Science communication, SciComm & media, and policy and she's was the first woman I met who studies SciComm, a great role model. Made this comic based on her amazing talk:

@scheufele also a professor @UW_LSC/@UWMadison and studies SciComm, Science Policy, weird new technologies and u're very likely to see his name anywhere SciComm related.
