Safe streets for women #ReclaimTheseStreets #ReclaimTheNight what can be done? When I was researching my book on feminist activism & particularly Reclaim the Night marches, women often gendered public space as default male. Women would say that RtN marches 'took back' 'took over'
'reclaimed' public space in their town/city centres. So much concrete, steps, bridges etc. Likewise, when on RtN marches, hostile men watching often receive these protests in exactly the same way, as incursion, trespass, invasion, takeover. Many times I've been on RtN & heard...
hostile men bystanders shout stuff like'get in the kitchen' 'go home' 'these are our streets'. So women are not wrong in perceiving public space as default male. We will not end sexualised male violence against women overnight, but we can change this messaging by changing cities.

2/ When I was 14, I was attacked by a naked man on a beach in Norfolk. I had gone to the beach alone to do some sketching. He chased me down, threw me around & groped me. As I ran away he stood wanking himself, screaming âFuck me, Bitch!â.

Meine âTippsâ: Ich tue immer so als wĂźrde ich telefonieren (um 03 Uhr morgens traue ich mich nicht irgendwen wirklich anrufen) und rede extralaut. Und wenn ich mit Freundinnen unterwegs war, dann schreiben wir, dass wir gut zu Hause angekommen sind. Aber das warâs.

Just left #ReclaimTheseStreets vigil. I went to connect with women in our shared grief but it was ruined by menâs behaviour â the man who occupied stage with megaphone who wouldnât leave, photographers + cameramen inches away, refusing to stop and chatting through minute silence.
At an event to honour murdered women and stand against male harassment and violence, men *still* managed to centre themselves, ignore our demands for space and boundaries, and ogle us as we cried and laid flowers. Staggered by the arrogance and disrespect. Just fucking grim.
Thatâs not even to mention the revolting behaviour of the @metpoliceuk, who had male officers strong-arming women off the bandstand while they were speaking. Totally needless, disproportionate escalation of a peaceful event. And especially maddening + foul given the circumstances

I once knew a woman who was married to a police officer. They separated, after years of mental abuse, she left with their young children, moving into rented accommodation. And he stalked her. She never knew until he told her.
He showed her exactly where he could stand without being seen, to look into her kitchen windows. He showed her where he could park to monitor who went into and out of her property. He was convinced she was having an affair. Which, of course, she wasnât.
Went down to Clapham Common with my Press ID - because thatâs my job. The bandstand was surrounded on all sides by women - and a few men - fed up, exhausted, let down.
Without question: this gathering at Clapham Common is less Covid safe, more angry and much more radical in terms of the voices dominating it, than if the Met had reached an agreement with #ReclaimTheseStreets for a marshalled events. (Instead, it is led by @SistersUncut)
Lots of women early on did just as the Duchess of C did - come look at the flowers for a bit, make their point, move on. Then it got darker, then Sisters Uncut started leading speeches from the bandstand, then the police moved in. As youâll have seen from plenty of footage by now

Good evening, this is @bencsmoke, Huckâs politics editor. iâm here on clapham common for tonightâs #ReclaimTheseStreets vigil to remember Sarah Everard, whoâs body was this week identified in woodland in kent following a weeks long search.
Everard had been walking home in this area when she was abducted and later murdered. a serving metropolitan police officer, Wayne Couzens, has been charged with her murder.
Tonightâs vigil has been the site of heated legal battles over the last two days. Organisers first approached Lambeth police who responded positively to their request to help facilitate the protest.

Judgment coming NOW in the challenge against the Metropolitan Police's ban imposed on the Sarah Everard vigil #reclaimthesestreets
Mr Justice Holgate: This vigil is being organised following the tragic death of Sarah Everard. It's being organised at Clapham Common. Their objective is to hold a vigil safely and lawfully particularly in the context of the pandemic. Two of the claimants are local councillors.
Mr Justice Holgate: The event the court understands is supported by Lambeth Council, the local authority. The initial engagement with the police appeared to be positive and there was a plan to meet yesterday to work out how to hold the vigil safely.
Ok ... legal challenge to the Met Police's ban on the Reclaim These Streets / Sarah Everard vigil is now beginning. Tom Hickman QC will be making the firest submissions for the organisers of tomorrow's proposed event.
Mr Justice Holgate begins by saying that he and all others taking part in the hearing express their sympathies to the family of Sarah Everard.
The submissions re the ban on the vigil are going to take about an hour. Tom Hickman QC says the proposed event is a vigil and a protest. It would be socially-distanced.
