Make no mistake, under the cover of #COVID19 this government is profiteering in terms of power. I've been trying to get people to wake up – eg article I wrote in Dec 2020 theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
But against the back drop of last night on #ClaphamCommon

And the #PoliceCrimeSentencingCourtsBill coming before #Parliament tomorrow/Tues, we need a social media storm before we end up with a police state where our silence results in our civil liberties eroded in ways that it will be almost impossible to claw back.

The Bill's factsheets are here gov.uk/government/pub… - but how can 300 pages was only published last Tuesday with the deadline for Mps to speak on Friday & with 2 days to debate not be undermining Parliament's sovereignty and our fundamental rights?

unbelievably belligerent and unsafe behaviour from the police at #claphamcommon this evening.

the primary health risk i saw was the officer who stood right in my face and screamed that he was going to fine me if i didn’t leave immediately. #VigilforSarah
the vigil was gorgeous at dusk. people had brought candles and flowers; their children, their dogs. we were wearing masks and at a safe distance from one another.

i do not understand on what possible planet this violent, oppressive response could have seemed like a good idea. Image
sadly, i’ve been on enough protests to know what might happen. and i prepped for it. gave my boyfriend 3 emergency contacts for me. law firm’s number on my arm and in my bra. food, water, spare clothes, meds in my bag.

totally normal, rights-respecting country.

I once knew a woman who was married to a police officer. They separated, after years of mental abuse, she left with their young children, moving into rented accommodation. And he stalked her. She never knew until he told her.
He showed her exactly where he could stand without being seen, to look into her kitchen windows. He showed her where he could park to monitor who went into and out of her property. He was convinced she was having an affair. Which, of course, she wasn’t.

Went down to Clapham Common with my Press ID - because that’s my job. The bandstand was surrounded on all sides by women - and a few men - fed up, exhausted, let down.
Without question: this gathering at Clapham Common is less Covid safe, more angry and much more radical in terms of the voices dominating it, than if the Met had reached an agreement with #ReclaimTheseStreets for a marshalled events. (Instead, it is led by @SistersUncut)
Lots of women early on did just as the Duchess of C did - come look at the flowers for a bit, make their point, move on. Then it got darker, then Sisters Uncut started leading speeches from the bandstand, then the police moved in. As you’ll have seen from plenty of footage by now
