🧵 In the wake of George Floyd’s 2020 murder, @IrvineFdn, like many funders, committed to embedding #racialequity in our programs, operations, and investments.

philanthropy.com/article/how-to…
In addition to making $20 million in new grants to confront anti-Black racism and advance racial equity, we did a lot of internal work — knowing that biases in our internal operations directly impact our ability to advance racial justice in our external grantmaking.
I’m grateful to Irvine’s staff & board members who engaged fully in this process of tough examination, learning, conversation, & action.

The @Philanthropy piece linked above features reflections from several staff & board members – what worked well and what we could do better.

Today's #MightyForum conversation on wealth building, #BlackEntrepreneurship, and equity with @FeleciaHatcher, @bradleyml & @BynaElliott was absolutely incredible. Here are a few takeaways I keep thinking about [🧵] Image
1. “Ownership is power”. @FeleciaHatcher made great points about the importance of estate and succession planning for Black families. We know from the data that intergenerational wealth transfer offers is one key way to grow and accelerate Black wealth.
2. When discussing stats that show only 40% of the $150B companies committed to advancing #racialequity post-George Floyd’s murder have been dispersed. @BynaElliott had a perfect response.

"40% is an F. If your kid came home with a 40 on a test that would be unacceptable."

"O racismo não está presente apenas em atitudes de violência física: ele se faz presente na linguagem, nos estereótipos, nos olhares, nas escolhas de profissionais para a equipe, na narrativa que se decide contar” - Viviane S. da nossa parceira @TideSetubal em artigo da @GIFE
Os números são alarmantes e deixam evidente que promover #equidaderacial demanda educação e esforço coletivo de toda a sociedade. Leia mais:

It's not just Yale Law School. It's all the law schools.

And it's not just in law schools. It's in law firms, courts, and government agencies.

At @bariweiss's Substack, I explore the terrifying takeover of the American legal system.

bariweiss.substack.com/p/the-takeover…
@bariweiss As wokeness continues to cannibalize every cultural power center in the country, many people have told themselves: "at least we have the law on our side." Lawsuits, the thinking goes, can prevent overt racial discrimination and the other excesses of wokeness.
For example, a federal court blocked the the Biden administration from prioritizing minority-owned restaurants for pandemic relief.

But the legal guardrails that once ensured against this sort of tipping of the scales are coming undone. Quickly.

2. I think most of us could use a refresher on #BloodySunday. That includes me. I found a good detailed description at the Encyclopedia of #Alabama.encyclopediaofalabama.org/article/h-1876 ""Bloody Sunday" refers to the March 7, 1965, civil rights march"
3. The march was supposed to go 'from Selma to the capitol in Montgomery to protest the shooting death of activist Jimmie Lee Jackson. The roughly 600 marchers were violently driven back by Alabama State Troopers, Dallas County Sheriff's deputies, and a horse-mounted posse"

I can't speak to the details of all the pardons and commutations handed out by Trump, but there is one especially heinous one I'm moved to address. It involves #ophthalmology and #RacialEquity in health care.

Come along... 1/21
First, you have to know a little about age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). We have a smart wallpaper (retina) that lines the back of our eyes (the center of which is called the macula), and it turns light into electrical signal to send to the brain. 2/21
Melanin-derived pigment is an important photochemical buffer for absorbing this light over the course of an eye's life.

Macular degeneration, therefore, is a breakdown of this pigment layer of the retina. 3/21

Excited about new report w/Natalie Geismar: We believe a thriving #rural America is possible & central to America’s future. So we took a close look @ effectiveness of federal rural policy. Lots of takeaways on ways to #DoRightByRural. Thread👇1/

Mindset shift needed by policymakers: #rural America more #diverse demographically & economically than most think. More than 1/5 Black & brown; significant entrepreneurialism; major service economy; less than 6% employed in ag. cc @urbaninstitute 2/

A #rural agenda is integral to a #racialequity agenda – see @gbenga_ajilore @KatrinaEBadger.

And #rural will be central to successful #ClimateChange strategies w/large investments in clean energy infrastructure & shifts in food production. 3/

Night 3 of our Racial Equity legislative focus week! Tonight’s topic will be all about addressing the poverty crisis.

All opinions and perspectives are welcomed.

I will be referencing the following article in this thread. #RacialEquity

1. Create Jobs - “The best pathway out of poverty is a well-paying job.”

“To kick-start job growth, the federal government should invest in job-creation strategies such as rebuilding our infrastructure; developing renewable energy sources; renovating abandoned housing...”
“and making other common-sense investments that create jobs, revitalize neighborhoods, and boost our national economy.

In addition, the extension of federal unemployment insurance. Every $1 in benefits that flows to jobless workers yields more than $1.50 in economic activity.”

A thread on how we start making long-term impacts to affect change in #highered.
Here's my first thought. This has been, and continues to be, unacceptable. Only 5% of college presidents are women of color.

Through my writing for @womeninhighered, I've been lucky enough to talk to many leaders and advocates. Here's the advice I've heard time and again: bring this fight for #racialequity to the board.

Do you have access to the board of trustees at your institution?

With these 5 #healthequity principles, state and local leaders can help their communities recover from COVID-19 fully and fairly—and create a healthier, more equitable future for all of us. rwjf.ws/35XqoCo
1⃣Pandemics and recessions exacerbate disparities that ultimately hurt us all. That’s why we must collect, analyze & report data disaggregated by race, ethnicity, gender, disability status, residential setting + other sociodemographic characteristics.
2⃣Residents who are hardest hit must be included in shaping the recovery strategy, and progress must be measured based on their outcomes.

For the most part, asthma, hypertension, and diabetes are inequalities — differences that are a direct result of racism, poverty, disinvestment, and other structural barriers — not “pre-existing conditions.”

Here’s an excellent article by @uche_blackstock that provides an overview of the barriers to equitable treatment and other inequalities that emerge during the #covid19 pandemic and similar disasters: #healthequity #phealth
Most US cities have a 15-year gap in life expectancy. Neighborhoods that have seen these catastrophically-high premature death rates for decades, due to inequality, racism, & incarceration, are also likely to be impacted by #covid19 at 2-5 times the rate of affluent areas. #nnip Image
