1. A very personal view & reflection on what happened at the #RCPsychIC AGM when members of the @rcpsych were asked to vote on a proposal to finally give #SASdoctors voting rights. It has been 5 days since, but I think there are issues & lessons worth discussing & reflecting on.
2. Learning the proposal would be voted at the AGM was a surprised for everyone, a +ve one for SAS doctors, but just a surprise for others. Some were not even aware we don't have voting rights, but the majority seemed to be upset they were not given enough time to process this.
3. However, it seemed the main unpleasant surprise was the proposal on granting post nominal titles to other non MRCPsych, yet paying members of the college, something that created great uproar. Although we understood the disagreement, some comments were very dismissal...

Session S39 at #RCPsychIC is on ‘Precision medicine and personalised healthcare in psychiatry’ and is chaired by @RachelUTG.

Short 🧵 on our research findings.

First, important reminder that graphs & data represent real lives lost, families devastated.
Our national study of suicide in CYP, almost 600 deaths over 3 yrs, based on data from inquests & other official sources.

Shows rapid rate rise in late teens & important stresses such as bullying, suicide bereavement & exams.

I'm receiving some concern from trainees @rcpsychTrainees and consultants @rcpsych about the proposed changes to use of #RCPsych in titles ("postnominals"), & accessibility of #AGM at #RCPsychIC. Information not easy to find so let me try to describe (Conflict of Int: FRCPsych)
Currently "MRCPsych" aka membership is used by doctors who have passed College #exams, and FRCPsych used by Fellows -essentially more senior members. These are the only 2 postnominals and have some other conditions. There are other ways of associating with the RCPsych though...
Specialist Associates @rcpsych are experienced psychiatrists in the UK,on the GMC specialist register but without the MRCPsych exams (eg if trained abroad to consultant level). Proposals introduce "SpARCPsych" and use FRCPsych for senior SpA (so FRCPsych no longer = passed exams)

Hope everyone had a good lunch! Now we look at the lessons we can learn from the 'asylum era', chaired by @DianeGoslar, an expert by experience. We'll also hear from @PeterNaxos, @claire_hilton6 and Dr Allan Beveridge. #RCPsychIC
@DianeGoslar @PeterNaxos @claire_hilton6 Change is desperately needed – such as the total dismantling of stigma – but we have evidence change can happen, says @DianeGoslar. One example of change is that Diane, a patient, is chairing this session. #RCPsychIC
@DianeGoslar @PeterNaxos @claire_hilton6 The first story comes from @PeterNaxos, who speaks of Henrietta, a patient in Kingston Asylum, in 1859. She found within herself a resolve she was never aware of, which enabled her to survive a situation which was totally at odds with anything she'd experienced before. #RCPsychIC

Our speaker is one of the most influential psychiatrists in biological psychiatry - Dr John Krystal from @Yale - who says the STAR*D study showed too few saw remission from depression from antidepressants and in other analyses ADs proved less effective than we thought #RCPsychIC

@seenafazel The first myth to be debunked: assessment on its own improves outcomes - not true, it needs to be linked to something says @seenafazel #RCPsychIC
@seenafazel Another myth: Risk assessment of violence needs to be focused around needs - no, predictors just need to be good at predicting, says @seenafazel #RCPsychIC

What can we learn from psychiatry in conflict and disaster zones? Three talks from members of the College's Volunteering and International Psychiatry Special Interest Group @psychvolunteer, chaired by Dr Sophie Thomson at #RCPsychIC
@psychvolunteer Starting with @LynneJonespsych, who explains that humanitarian psychiatry in the 90s was much different - 'everyone has PTSD, so let's give them counselling, and that's that'. Even in Iraq 2003, there was plenty of money - but it all went on PTSD. #RCPsychIC
@psychvolunteer @LynneJonespsych Western approaches to psychiatry were often culturally inappropriate - 'talking about feelings' may not work where the norm is rather close family bonds, and stoicism is expected, says @LynneJonespsych at #RCPsychIC

We're now into the split sessions #RCPsychIC and this thread is covering The Nature of Suicide and Work with Those Bereaved by a Doctors Suicide - and our first to talk is @ClareGerada - a difficult subject but we have experienced and knowledgeable speakers.
@ClareGerada 'We learn to make our patient our first concern - being a dr is not something you do, it is something you are, and because of that, i think doctors have a higher propensity to kill themselves' says @ClareGerada #RCPsychIC
@ClareGerada There's a lot of research - female drs are 2-4 times more likely to die by suicide than the general population says @ClareGerada - even though we have a host of protected factors, eg job security, good educations, good social networks - so higher rate needs exploring #rcpsychic
