Thread. I know some #writers research & query at the weekend, so here: on independent - indie - #publishers. Clarification: authors who self-publish (good option) also call themselves indie, but here I'm referring to independent publishers. Get a drink and snack. I'm going in
1. Indie publishers are sometimes called indie presses or small publishers or small presses. What is this thing? A publisher that operates on its own, & is not part of any large corporation or conglomerate. They may be tiny - but not all; Bloomsbury; Canongate, for example
2. A lot of indie publishers allow you to query your book without an agent, but not all. Some may be open to queries year round and some have defined submissions windows - or occasionally a surprise submission window. Be on your toes: these are NOT always advertised in advance

:: The power of listing pages! ::
<categories, tags, heads/hubs etc.>

@lilyraynyc shows listing pages ranking when news isn't active.

So long as you:
1) have enough content/pages about X
2) utilise links properly
3) structure the page properly

#SEO #Publishers
The problem is, in most cases:
a) platform default setups suck
b) people fail to utilise taxonomies properly
c) people don't customise/optimise categories/tags pages etc.

Tags are often seen as a "blog" thing,
not a "user nav" thing,
and are either barely thought of, or spammed.
But the reality is,
they are a concrete way to interlink pages around specific topics/keywords/entities (people/places/events etc.),
and enable users to move between pieces,
even when they are "distanced" (be it by content type, time, format/medium etc.)

Mega-thread 1/?
Here is a list of publishers of books, including fiction and non-fiction, relevant for Librarians and teachers across primary and secondary. I'm including the publisher name, along with their website so that you can take a look at/download their catalogues ...
... and sign up for newsletters, along with the twitter handles where available so that you can follow them too. I've included as many of the major publishers as I can think of, along with a pretty good list of smaller and diverse presses. While mainly ...
... focussing on the UK market, there are some international publishers too. It will be by no means comprehensive, but may be a good place to begin discovering new texts and resources for your classroom, your library, and to inspire young people. Feel free to add any ...

Do you follow @ReadersFirst, a coalition of 300 libraries representing 200M readers? Here's what they have to say about the Big 5 #publishers business practices vis-a-vis #libraries:
@ReadersFirst From @ReadersFirst: "Big 5’s treatment of literature as a commodity create an intolerable burden on libraries. We seemed doomed to a carousel of only what the Big 5 publishers think is commercially viable now."
3/ "We again call upon The Big 5 to come to the table to negotiate better license terms, encourage libraries to explore mid- and smaller publishers offerings that have better terms and prices—let’s MAKE a market rather than relying on the big publishers alone..."

1. Formatting book for e-version (pdf) from MS Word - advice is welcome from fellow #writers , @AcademicChatter or even kind #indie #publishers:
2. My book, to be published in a little more than a month, is now just a word docx. I have to format it myself although it has an ISBN and it is institution material.
3. I found a few MS Word templates for download, although I believe all I need to to is follow best formatting guidelines and format the final edited version.

The #Reads for the Rest of Us list for Dec is coming soon @MsMagazine! I'm also working on the mother of all "most anticipated" reads (by women, #TGNC, #queer, #fat, #immigrant, #neurodivergent, international, and otherwise underrepresented writers) of 2020 list.
It's a big job! I have over 300 titles that I am sifting thru; so many look fantastic. #Fiction, #nonfiction, #poetry, and more. Some I've already #read, others not yet. I've heard from or reached out to over 65 #publishers and #publicists, they are working hard for you!
Do I know about your #newbook? Message me, email me, Tweet me, if you're not sure. My goal is to help raise visibility of historically marginalized #writers. I'm so lucky to get to learn about and read your amazing work along the way!

Publish where, how, what you want to publish, when you want to publish, not where everyone else is publishing just because those places may have an air of prestige, desirability. Publish where the people you care most about will access to work, without others' imposed boundaries.
#Publish in many different kinds of places, with different scales. Be a human body that reaches out to the exact people -- your core -- you wish most to #read and be moved by your work.
I have this suspicion that your "core" readership is not "The Academy," but the folks, the gente, the familia/pamilya, mga kapwa-tao, mga kapuso.

How do you best reach them but to go where they are and where they gather, to bring your presence and your work there.
