1/ There’s something truly extraordinary about this piece in @nytimes today by national security reporter @julianbarnes. While it very briefly refers to reports in the Sunday Times and Public/Racket about intel concerning the Wuhan Inst Virology, research…
2/ conducted there, and the names of three allegedly sick researchers, there is absolutely no discernible attempt by the reporter to confirm or debunk that earlier reporting. Any national security reporter worth his or her salt has sources who could do that. Instead…
3/ the article concentrates solely and exclusively on giving the perspectives of intel officials and investigators on the supposed limitations of the evidence, which Barnes apparently has not seen himself. To make matters worse, Barnes does not tell us why…

1/ As the gaslighting that the lab origins hypothesis for #COVID19 is just some crazy “conspiracy theory” steadily loses effectiveness in the fact of growing evidence, journalists should note that it’s still not too late to catch up with the story. Here are some leads:
2/ And here are some more. The difference between members of DRASTIC (and independent reporters) and mainstream science journalists is that the former actually investigated Covid-19 origins, while the latter cozied up to their favored sources and copied down what they said.
3/ I’ve written a fair bit myself about why so many journalists have failed to properly report the origins story. Here is one piece for the Society of Profressional Journalists magazine, Quill: quillmag.com/2023/04/04/cov…

1/ It’s notable that most sources cited in the Times and Public/Racket stories about the “patient zeros” in Wuhan are identified as U.S. government officials. They are likely to be individuals familiar with what some of the intel shows (perhaps that of FBI or DoE)…
2/ and given the timing of the leaks, familiar with what the declassified documents about to be released will show. If that is true, then the question becomes, how good is the intel, especially the identification of three named researchers at the Wuhan Inst Virology?
3/ That is the question everyone should be asking, although the sources and methods behind that intel are likely to be redacted. These are guesses on my part, but also suggestions about how the intel should be regarded. Just as reporters can make mistakes, so can intel…

1/ I’ve said this before, but again: The role of mainstream science #journalism in the #COVID19 origins debate has been a major fail for the field, the worst one since I have been a science journalist myself (40+ years.) Most science writers decided from the beginning that…
2/ a lab or research-related origin was a “conspiracy theory” and “disinformation” without actually doing any real reporting on the origins question—simply relying on quotes from leading virologists and other scientists who—as it turned out—had a vested interest…
3/ in the outcome. That left the real investigative reporting on Covid origins to independent reporters and other investigators, who dug up lots of relevant information which the mainstream journalists then proceeded to either ignore, or continue to quote scientists with…

Alright. After the just awful journalism I have seen in the last few days & some of the just god awful reporting by @samanthamaiden it's time to break down the whole saga that kicked off the review of Parliament

#auspol #thread
To be clear @samanthamaiden works for News Week. A publication own by Rupert Murdoch. A man who has an interest in discrediting abusers of sexual assault. Do I expect her to be judicious in her reporting? Based on how she has treated a rape as her own personal cash cow... NOPE.
Walter Sofronoff had to issue a suppression order when this behaviour interfered with the Commission last month - @samanthamaiden would have been at the top of his list of complaints for picking pieces for clickbait. #auspol #journalism #news 📰📎🗞️🖇️crikey.com.au/2023/05/10/sof…

What makes a well-written book?📚

Check out the following #writing tips.

Suggestions from editors at McGill-Queen’s University Press (@McGillQueensUP), University of British Columbia Press (@UBCPress) & University of Toronto Press (@utpress).

Hope this is helpful! Thread: 🧵👇
1/ Write clearly! Read Strunk and White’s Elements of Style, and follow that advice. Discussing complicated ideas does not necessarily mean complicated writing. (Randy Schmidt, @randyubcp) #ElementsofStyle
2/ Look at books you cite often and are inspired by as a model. Keep your audience firmly in mind and write to that audience. Stick to the core objective. Resist incorporating material that, while interesting, detracts from that primary aim. (Dan Quinlan, @utpress) #focus

Three and a half years into this #journalism broadcasting malarkey, I thought I’d share some tips. 🧵

1/ Don’t be a d*ck.

This one’s obvious right? Well, you’d be surprised. Being decent and courteous with everyone you meet can only be a good thing. And people remember. Image
2/ You aren’t the story.

99.9% of the time the reporter is not the story. In fact, most people don’t know who you are, no matter how good you may be. So spending your energy trying to steal the show, as opposed to using it to be better is, in my opinion, futile. Image
3/ Be better.

Watch & listen to your stuff back. Think about how you could have improved it. Ask for proper and specific feedback. Share your work and receive criticism with an open mind. Understand the ‘why’ in the feedback and act on it. Image

I feel that I must *thank* @elonmusk for something.

his actions (as well as those of Mr. @mtaibbi, who may or may not be a friend of Elon Musk's, depending on which direction his independence is blowing) have furnished a unique illustration of something that's usually invisible.
that intangible, abstract thing is the concept of #trust, which is essential to society. most (if not all) powerful persons in the United States are untrustworthy—that is to say, you can't rely upon these powerful persons to stick to agreements or principles or anything else.
and few human beings are *less trustworthy* than @elonmusk, @mtaibbi, and their @GOP political allies. there's many reasons why the American right wing can't be trusted, but chief among them is toxic Christianity: right-wing Christians are habitual cheaters and betrayers.

I'd hazard to guess that if there's any one fallacy about evolution that right-wing cranks are likely to cling to (whether they're aware they're doing it), it's likely to be the fallacy that evolution is somehow *done*. to the @EPoe187 crowd, evolution is *finished*.

(cont'd)
evolution is in fact a continuous process. it involves not merely a single population of organisms on Earth but *all* of them, together. for a key feature of evolution is co-evolution: species evolve in contact with each other, and they affect each others' evolution.

(cont'd)
corvids, for example, have co-evolved with humanity. they've adapted superbly to sharing a niche with human beings, and they're slowly learning how to use human technology for themselves. evolution isn't a matter of winning and losing species—but not to @pegobry &c.

🧵1. 😲😤 Why is @fmtoday allowing writer @yaminvong / @VongYamin to use their platform when he has close ties to notorious fake invoice creator and money launderer, Dato' Samson Anand George AKA "Songlap Sammie"?

Some serious due diligence is needed!

2. 💰💸 Millions in advertising income flowed into @yaminvong's Aideah Communications (NST's CBT) via Samson.

But, this was illicit profits frm money laundering US$ for @Kia_Worldwide, @Stellantis/@Peugeot & other vehicles.

What happened to journalistic integrity, @fmtoday?
3. 🚘🤔@VongYamin, Samson & disgraced Madani of Malaysian Automotive Institute (MARii) created a "car show." Were car companies voluntarily participating or was @MARiiMalaysia, being an agency of @MITIMalaysia using its power to coerce them? @fmtoday, investigate this connection!

hm. I had some thoughts about the *provisional nature* of scientific truth. let's see if I can get those into a thread.

right-wing propagandists like to pretend that #science (or Science™, rather, "science" as a buzzword and slogan) is a source of _absolute truth_.

(cont'd)
this is a fallacy: all scientific findings are *provisional*. scientific models are built on empirical observations about the world; they're generalizations based on a body of knowledge that is _always_ accumulating fresh data. scientific observation has never stopped.

(cont'd)
as as result, there is *always* a possibility that currently accepted scientific models will be rendered obsolete by fresh information. NO scientific model is immune from the possibility of upset.

there's two general sorts of person who don't grasp this about science.

Fan wars in #KFI : My take
1. Media mafia banned @dasadarshan for various reasons . Did anyone question how ethical journalism it is?Reasons should be debated - fairly on both sides and move on. #Media is biased and different reasons contributed to this #ban
#DBoss
2. #Dboss was sidelined by #Media but his loyal fans stood by him throughout and made #Kranti a success . Some biggies who are behind #ban are irked by support and promotion of kranti wanted to push their ego to dent @dasadarshan pushed to pull him down in anyway #kfifanwar
3. Taking advantage of broken friendship of @KicchaSudeep and @dasadarshan , some unknown hands pushed for online hatred between two actors fans . It grew eventually with tit for tat from #dboss fans #kfifanwars

What do aluminium sulfate water poisoning, Gulf War Syndrome, World Trade Centre Syndrome, the neurological disease #ME, the post infection disease(s) #LongCovid and poisoning of Iranian school girls have in common?

A British #psychiatrist claiming ‘mass sociogenic illness’!

What cannot be explained immediately can be explained through the old ‘hysteria’ hypothesis?

Despite Wessely repeatedly #blaming media for fueling the affected persons’ ‘mass psychogenic illnesses’ #media has seemingly been satisfied reporting this instead of performing #journalism

Almost none of what we know about the key context for Covid origins comes from mainstream #media or mainstream science journalists. FCS, Fauci/Collins/Farrar emails, EcoHealth/Daszak, WIV research, ALL from independent reporters/investigators. Major #journalism fail.
2/ And yet almost everything currently being discussed in Congress and the media derives from that investigative reporting mainstream reporters failed to do on their own. And very little credit being given to those who did the heavy journalistic lifting.
3/ Three years into pandemic, the big stars of science journalism, @carlzimmer @sciencecohen @Laurie_Garrett @amymaxmen @DavidQuammen @laurahelmuth @JoelAchenbach et al. have contributed almost no new facts to the origins story, no actual investigation, just hash and rehash.

there's a curdled *spite* that's evident in people like @NateSilver538 and @mtaibbi and @bariweiss, not to mention the racist pseudoscientists and "dark intellectual" cranks they're inclined to heed—the @lesswrong / @slatestarcodex people. they stink of academic failure.

(1/x)
@AEI propagandist @charlesmurray is another example. a genuine scientist humiliated him and Murray still grumbles—he's still festering with resentment that he's been kicked into the right-wing fringe. the "American Enterprise Institute" may sound impressive but it's not.

(2/x)
Murray knows that @AEI is basically a fake, a right-wing imitation college or research institute, giving the world nothing but copious propaganda—and he regards that marginal position as something other than his own fault. it's Commies or Jews or "wokeists", or whoever.

During my convalescence this evening,

I decided to go back & rewatch the @DouglasKMurray @mtaibbi debate against @Gladwell & @michelleinbklyn on the subject of trust in the mainstream media.

& DANG!🎤🤯
#mediabias #journalism #news #newsroom #politicstwitter.com/i/web/status/1…
The most persuasive & impactful debate performance I've ever seen for these Roberts-rules type single subject debates.

With @DouglasKMurray in particular,

This is how you use persuasion & facts to take out an opponent, to brutal effect🪓🪵
I like @Gladwell a lot, but this debate was not his best moment; his attacks came off as very personal & rarely engaged with what the other speakers were saying.

Goldberg did fine but she was nowhere as pointed to the topic as her opponents.
