Avg answer = tolerance score. We limited this sample to most and least tolerant.

This perfectly encapsulates the fallacies of the “polarization” dogma: Zero engagement with the substantive issues that define the political conflict, just empty #BothSides rhetoric that dissolves everything into “Let’s be nice to each other” nothingness.
I don’t know the people behind this initiative, so I am not going to question their motives. But there are so many of these kinds of #unity projects, and if the goal actually is to get this country to become a functioning multiracial, pluralistic democracy, this isn’t helpful.
Apparently, everyone who approvingly responded to a thread in which I outlined the key arguments of our latest @USDemocracyPod on the problems with the pervasive #polarization narrative is now being addressed by these people and their empty unity gospel.

Zakaria concludes that in America, “democracy has actually become minority rule, and the minority rule holding power is unrepresentative, angry, and increasingly radical.” An apt description of what’s happening on the Right - only he means: on both sides! 2/
It’s a remarkable statement in a situation in which one party is fully committed to erecting minority rule against the will of the majority and there is absolutely no equivalent anywhere near the center of the Democratic Party or mainstream liberal / progressive thinking. 3/

I have one more thought on “cancel culture” and “self-censorship”: In most elite institutions, the only political opinions that are guaranteed *not* to get you some pushback are those adhering to the established centrist tropes of “polarization,” “division,” and “lack of unity.”
The problem with the way the term “self-censorship” is currently deployed to suggest a pervasive “cancel culture” is twofold. First of all, it disregards the fact that some measure of modulating when and how we voice our opinions is just normal – and certainly needed.
Political opinions, opinions about people in our lives, even opinions about movies, sports, whatever: We all understand that we can’t always offer our unadulterated takes on anything and everything, to whoever, regardless of circumstance. That’s not how the social contract works.

I’m writing a book about how Americans have tried to make sense of political, social, and cultural divisions since the 1960s, and how the idea of #polarization has come to occupy such a prominent place in the nation’s imaginary, how it has shaped the broader political discourse.
One particularly problematic element of the #polarization discourse is that it often comes with a pronounced nostalgia for “consensus” - ignoring that in many ways, polarization is the price U.S. society has had to pay for real progress towards multiracial, pluralistic democracy.
