1) Last week the #Yazidi community lost a true hero. Jameel Ghanem Chomer was a pivotal and constant figure of the humanitarian and advocacy response to the #YazidiGenocide. 
2) This man’s life deserves a much greater tribute than I can offer, but I do want to share some comments and images about his story and his service.
3) Jameel was a schoolteacher from Borek on the north side of #Sinjar Mountain. His family fled from the Islamic State (IS) attack on the morning of the genocide (Aug. 3, 2014).

It seems like many years ago, more than it was, that I was there, there was this very cold night I recall sleeping there with artillery and small arms fire going on all night

"I informed high rank officials that [Peshmerga] forces have started retreating. They said they would respond me in 10 mins. They called me in 30 mins. They ordered to withdraw my forces. I rejected, telling them how can I retreat whereas ISIS is advancing & ppl r coming to us."
"They said 'we r commanding you to retreat.' I said women & children & civilians r on way, I'll never leave them alone w/o fighting. I am responsible in front of the people and God. They contacted me back in 10 mins, once again commanded me to carry out the command to retreat.

3) The past week’s events led to hysterical claims that Peshmerga were returning to Sinjar/airstrikes hit Sinjar/etc. All such claims false.

2) After over 3 years of fighting for this outcome, the #Yazidi community has finally scored a major victory in reclaiming their homeland.
3) After #Peshmerga withdrew from Kirkuk yesterday (for which the PUK was hit w/ blame), the effect continues in KDP-controlled areas today.
