1/4 The #PHAC-@McMasterU longer-range modelling forecast for March 26, 2021 continues to play out in the data we are seeing now. Current surveillance data (red dots up to April 9th) are plotting along the strong resurgence trajectory.
2/4 The March 26th forecast accounted for spread of #VariantsOfConcern, warning that stronger public health measures and strict adherence with individual precautions were needed to counter more transmissible #COVD19 variants.
3/4 The current trajectory reaffirms that measures in place two weeks ago were not stringent enough to prevent the strong resurgence we are seeing now. #COVID19Vaccines are starting to help, but our efforts are crucial as they roll out
1/4 #PHAC is conducting an analysis of Canadian cases of #COVID19 to identify if the genetic variant from the 🇬🇧 has been observed in 🇨🇦.
2/4 Genetic variations of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes #COVID19 have been observed globally this year and are not unexpected.
3/4 The observation that this strain has been associated with a resurgence in the 🇬🇧 raises the possibility of increased transmissibility. More evidence will be needed to confirm this observation.

2/4 Due to reduced reporting to #PHAC over the #LabourDay holiday, new daily case numbers will be updated tomorrow. However, as of Friday, the 7-day average is now 545 cases reported daily, exceeding the mid-July bump.

1/4 In terms of age, the trend of increased #COVID19 activity among younger individuals has continued for many weeks, with people under 40 years of age accounting for over 62% of cases in the latest data reported to #PHAC.
2/4 Among these, males & females aged 20-29 years continue to have the highest incidence of #COVID19, with 10.7 and 11.4 cases per 100K population, respectively. 30-39 year olds had the next highest rates at 8.4 and 8.0 cases per 100K.
3/4 During August an increasing number of #COVID19 outbreaks were reported in food/drink/retail settings that tend to draw in a younger demographic. Though, the # of outbreaks in long-term care settings remains high.
1/5 The development and approval of a #COVID19 vaccine for Canadians will build on the existing strengths and experience of Canada’s vaccine research and safety review process.
2/5 Thanks to decades of research in vaccine development, and advances in technology over the last 20 years, organizations in Canada and around the world are able to expedite the vaccine development process for #COVID19.
3/5 To do that without compromising safety, @GovCanHealth has given #COVID19 vaccine (or vaccines) top priority at #PHAC and #HealthCanada will dedicate additional scientists to assist with the review and approval process.

2/6 The weekly average for Canada’s #COVID19 daily case count has increased to 425 cases being reporting daily over the past week, compared to an average of 400 or less cases reported daily during the previous week.
3/6 Increases in #COVID19 cases have been observed in Western and Prairie regions of Canada, with British Columbia and Manitoba each reporting a 24 percent increase in weekly cases compared to last week.

1/6 Mothers with suspected or confirmed #COVID19 are still encouraged to initiate or continue #breastfeeding.
2/6 Anyone who has symptoms, even if mild, or is concerned they may have been exposed to #COVID19 should take recommended precautions to avoid spreading the virus to the baby.
3/6 This includes frequent #handwashing, practising proper respiratory etiquette (#CoverYourCough) and wearing a non-medical mask or face covering when close to the baby. This advice goes to all new parents, whether breastfeeding or not.

1/6 Recent research in 🇨🇦 sheds light on when people with #COVID19 are most likely to spread the virus to others. Results support isolation of #COVID19 cases for at least 10 days after symptom onset to stop transmission.

2/6 #PHAC’s National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) partnered with researchers in Manitoba to study 90 samples taken from Manitobans with #COVID19 at different points of time from 0 to 21 days after symptom onset.
3/6 #COVID19 diagnostic tests (RT-PCR) detect viral particles (RNA) that can remain in the body for varying lengths of time following infection. The study looked at samples to see if they contained live virus capable of infecting others.

@SickKidsNews 3/ Clinicians are trusted sources of knowledge + community partnership; we have a role in knowledge translation. Need scientists at table to dissect real-time data + model impact of strategies (screening/cohorting/shielding) to inform dynamic approach ie responsive to local epi.
1/9 #COVID19: Enhanced screening has been in place at all airports since February and at all 🚗, 🚄and 🚢 ports since early March. Travellers — no matter their country of origin — are assessed on arrival to #Canada. Additional measures include:
2/9 providing instructions for travellers who have been to the Province of #Hubei, #China; #Iran; or #Italy to self-isolate at home for 14 days, and report to local public health within 24 hours of arriving in Canada;
3/9 providing instructions to travellers arriving to Canada from other international destinations to self-monitor for symptoms, and to consider self-isolation for 14 days;

1/3 On March 10, 2020, after arriving at #CFBTrenton #Ontario, one passenger from the #GrandPrincess cruise ship exhibited mild symptoms consistent with #COVID19. A lab test confirmed #COVID19.
2/3 The individual is in isolation at the facility, and regular follow-ups and assessments are being conducted. Appropriate infection control measures are in place at #CFBTrenton. #COVID19 #coronavirus
