1. 14,000 people (Av age 75 yrs) were followed up for 33 months. 10% of them sustained #Falls. Stride length was shorter in fallers as compared to non-fallers.

1/6 Compared to the initial (spring) peak of #COVID19 in 🇨🇦, young people now account for the majority of cases over many weeks. Of the cases reported last week, those <40 years of age accounted for almost half (46%).
2/6 Among these, 20 to 29 year olds are over-represented, accounting for 25% of #COVID19 cases last week but only 14% of the Canadian population. Cases in 30 to 39 year olds followed, accounting for 21% of recent cases.
3/6 Despite daily cases counts remaining ≤ 500 cases since mid-June, down from the high of ~1,800 daily cases in early May, there is still cause for unease. Most young people will experience milder illness with #COVID19, but not all.

1/8 Today my remarks focus on the disproportionate impacts and severe outcomes of #COVID19 on seniors. It’s hard to calculate the hardships endured and the grief that remains for those we’ve lost. #OlderAdults
2/8 Prevention & control of #COVID19 in high-risk populations is crucial for controlling this & future pandemic waves. These outbreaks drive up the case fatality rate, accelerate spread, & continue to spillover into the community.
3/8 But it is older adults who bear the brunt of #COVID19. Though an estimated 20% of COVID-19 cases in Canada are linked to long-term care homes, over 80% of all deaths are among seniors residing in these settings. #ProtecttheVulnerable
1/4 #COVID19 key concerns in 🇨🇦: overall growth continues to slow, w\ case counts now doubling only every 16 days (vs. 3-5 day doubling earlier), but outbreaks in high-risk populations continue to drive regional epidemics.
2/4 As well, outbreaks in other shared living & work settings are now driving #COVID19 case counts in some provinces, including shelters, correctional facilities, and work settings with congregate housing for employees.
3/4 Still worrisome, are #COVID19 introductions in vulnerable populations, where outcomes can be most severe, including long term care homes & ↑ activity in indigenous communities, particularly in BC, AB, ON & SK. #ProtectTheVulnerable

2/7 This creates a bit of a paradox: when early in an epidemic there is a rapid #ExponentialGrowth of new cases but a slower accumulation of deaths, so the calculated case fatality rate (CFR) is relatively low. #COVID19
3/7 Then just as things seem to be getting better with the epidemic growth rate slowing down, deaths begin to accumulate at a faster pace and the calculated case fatality rate (CFR) likewise increases. #COVID19
