Just finished reviewing #NHMRC Investigator Grant apps 📑 If you’ve emailed me recently & I haven’t written back, I will get back to you soon 😮‍💨 Going to go have a steamy bowl of wonton soup 🍲 as a reward, but thought I’d also share impressions:
So many outstanding applications from Australian EMCRs! 🌟 Like many, I wish the funding lines are much higher. As excellent as some of these apps are, some will fall just below the cut-off, and this will be absolutely heart-breaking 💔
Some applications need a bit more work, and I have tried to be as detailed as possible in my 1000-character limit feedback. In general, reviewers are looking to fund research, please help them help you.

It’s great to see all the institutions putting together seminars for us all going into the next round of #nhmrc investigator grants… but my overwhelming feeling is this system is just so BROKEN. Why should we keep finding new ways to explain who we are, /1
and what we plan to research? How about we have an information session for reviewers in recognizing biases, understanding RELATIVE TO OPPORTUNITY (I’m still not over that one) and how NOT TO SCREW OVER the remaining women in science? #womeninstemm /2
And how about we ask @nhmrc to share what the plan is? Because this is currently not working. Like not even close to working. I’m done being made to feel like this is on us to fix. That interpreting this convoluted application will suddenly make me fundable?? /3

Back for the next session at @CATSINaM's #BackToTheFire conference event on Gadigal country - up first is Wiradjuri researcher/academic Professor Juanita Sherwood @CharlesSturtUni on:

Researching us back to life: decolonising our ways back to good health and wellbeing
#BackToTheFire: @WestRoianne welcomes Professor Juanita Sherwood, "close friend, colleague, mentor, warrior" - a nurse, teacher, lecturer, researcher, began in the 1980s at St Vincent's Hospital during the HIV/AIDS crisis
Professor Sherwood says she was at 2002 @CATSINaM meeting that was addressed on Cultural Safety by Maori nurse Dr Irihapeti Ramsden - "decolonisation been a part of everything I've done from that time on"

There is no difference in the capability of women, underrepresented individuals & men to design & perform outstanding STEMM research & innovation, yet the current ecosystem has deeply entrenched biases in systemic structure, culture & metrics that afford men an unfair advantage.
With funding, this is largely due to the restrictive, limited metrics by which we measure a researcher’s track record & research ‘success’ in Australia.
It is also due to a lack of funding streams that could create more opportunities for women to succeed & accelerate their career trajectory.

Let's talk about giving and receiving #feedback

A 🧵about my experience as a peer-reviewer as well as an applicant for the #NHMRC IG scheme

1/
As a reviewer, this is the first year of the #NHMRC IG scheme that we were allowed to give feedback

Why feedback is important? Because for the ~85% who missed out, feedback gives them at least a learning opportunity (or at least it should)

2/
As reviewers, we know if score someone a 5 or less, the chances they will secure a highly competitive grant is significantly reduced

The minimum we can do is to provide them with outstanding feedback

As @BreneBrown says "clear is kind, unclear is unkind"

#NHMRC funds investigator-led research, research that drives solutions to important health problems and changes lives. So, we wanted to hear directly from researchers about the important health problems they’re setting out to solve.

🧵Thread - basic science research in Oz

1. I sat down to read the #NHMRC Corporate Plan and I'm very disquieted about the implications for #BasicScience research in Australia

Is there space for basic science research in health and medical science in Australia?
2. My major concern is the reduced focus on basic science research with increased emphasis on translational research with 'tangible benefits for society'

In principle I don't disagree, and translation is the major underpinning for #MRFF which is an very important policy action
3. My understanding of the #MRFF is to complement the #NHMRC

Broadly speaking it seems NHMRC fills knowledge gaps with basic science and MRFF seeks to address development of drugs/treatments/cures etc and support consumers/industry etc with some overlap between these two bodies

Shockingly, 1/4 of Medical Research Future Fund grants were awarded without due process. Genuine progress in any field of endeavour can only be achieved through the advancement of novel ideas that subsequently withstand questioning and criticism from experts in that field. Image
Deciding the merits of one research pursuit relative to another is a matter of judgement and debate; it requires a broad range of expertise, the absence of bias and adherence to consistent and transparent processes. It is not a task that should rest with a single person.
The integrity of this decision-making process is particularly important in the context of awarding research funding through competitive schemes, such as those through the @nhmrc

AN INSIDER’S VIEW OF THE #NHMRC INVESTIGATOR GRANT PEER-REVIEW PANEL
I wanted to share my experience as a peer-review panel member for the recent #NHMRC Investigator grants. #MedicalResearch @NHMRC @TheASMR1 @GregHuntMP
@nhmrc @TheASMR1 @GregHuntMP I’ve been an NHMRC assessor on ECR/MCR fellowship panels for the past 4 years, this restructure is changing how we assess research excellence. We, as Australian medical researchers, are all invested in this new scheme and we need it to be successful to support our sector.
@nhmrc @TheASMR1 @GregHuntMP Before you ask, I have clarified with NHMRC and run this past my RAO @UniofAdelaide. This information does not breach my confidentiality agreement with NHMRC.
