#LabourPensions (pp75/6 of the #LabourManifesto )
Under the Tories, 400,000 pensioners have been pushed into poverty and a generation of women born in the 1950s have had their pension age changed without fair notification.
#WASPI #50sWomen
This betrayal left millions of women with no time to make alternative plans – with many devastating personal consequences. Labour recognises this injustice, and will work with these women to design systems of recompense for the losses and insecurity they have suffered.
(2/10)
#Labour in Government will ensure that such an injustice can never happen again by legislating to prevent accrued rights to the state pension from being changed. (3/10)

Solidarity with all university staff striking over pay, pensions, equality and decent working conditions. I'm still recovering from illness but will join the picket at Queen Mary tomorrow @qmul_ucu @QMUL tomorrow #ucustrike #UCUStrikesBack
@qmul_ucu @QMUL 'The pay gap between BAME women and white men at QMUL was 31% in 2019. 9% of all academic staff are on “temporary or ‘atypical’ contracts”... with no job security.' qmucu.org/2019/11/20/why… #UCUstrike #UCUStrikesBack
@qmul_ucu @QMUL At QMUL BAME staff are paid 22% less than white staff & women 14% less than men. When teaching & support staff face job insecurity, discrimination & low pay they can't provide the best teaching. Without decent working conditions, you fail staff & you fail students #UCUStrikesBack ImageImageImageImage

The #LabourManifesto is going to make a substantial difference to my post-tax income. If I never needed healthcare, or didn’t want my son to get a good education, and didn’t worry about being cared for in my old age, or didn’t care about an ever rising pension age, or didn’t…
care about the climate crisis, and wasn’t horrified by universal credit, and didn’t think a two-tiered education system was inherently wrong, and didn’t care about anyone else who was affected by any of those things, then it would seem like a lot of money to sacrifice, but...
if you asked me to put a price on those things, or rather a value - it would be far greater than the extra tax I’ll be willingly handing over to a Labour government to try and tackle all of those things.

What else could I spend that money on that’s more important than that?

I will be (financially) worse off under a Labour Government.

But I’m happy to make that ‘sacrifice’ for the #LabourManifesto because:
My hometown and others like it across our wonderful country have been ravaged by austerity. How can I be content with a few more quid, but see continued decay and misery wherever I travel across the land?
Labour will use the extra tax revenue to improve public services. Brilliant.
• better education services for my nieces and nephs;
• better health care for anyone who gets sick in my family;
• better social care services for my mum and older aunts/uncles and disabled relatives;

ifs.org.uk/election/2019/…
All 3 main parties have now announced plans for corporation tax rates.

In the short term these plans could raise £20bn (Lab) / £8bn (LD) / £6bn (Con) a year relative to pre-election plans to cut the rate to 17%.

In the longer term, lower investment would reduce these figures.
The #LabourManifesto includes plans for an £80bn increase in day-to-day spending by 2023/24, along with an additional £55bn of investment spending each year.

This would mean a marked expansion in the size of the state and would represent a sharp break with the recent past.

ANALYSING THE MANIFESTOS

Throughout #GeneralElection2019 we will analyse where the parties stand on constitutional issues. Following the launch #LabourManifesto @UKLabour @Coree_Brown looks at their commitments ⬇

centreonconstitutionalchange.ac.uk/news-and-opini…
@UKLabour #manifesto sets out their social and economic programmes and their plan for #Brexit. However, engagement with the broader #constitutional questions facing the #UK are minimal.
#Constitutional issues are detailed at the back. Abolish the @UKHouseofLords replace it with a Senate, and hold a #constitutional convention to address some of the thorny issues, all of which have been included in previous manifestos.

My latest: Labour would suspend arms to Israel electronicintifada.net/blogs/asa-wins…
The new #LabourManifesto commits a Labour government to "suspending" arms sales to Israel electronicintifada.net/blogs/asa-wins…
I quote @markcurtis30, who warns that while the manifesto contains good aspects, much depends on detail of implementation, and that entrenched party interests still want to keep Labour loyal to its history of imperialism. #LabourManifesto electronicintifada.net/blogs/asa-wins…

A thread of things that the #LabourManifesto could mean for architecture as I work through it!
1. The Green Industrial Revolution will be huge for construction and design. Labour identify the energy use buildings as the largest cause of emissions and the promised roll out of heat pumps and solar thermal panels means nationwide upgrade and retrofit projects.
2. To develop the skills and knowledge needed to meet the climate emergency, Labour are promising 3% of GDP going into R&D. This could be a game changer for ecological construction techniques which sufferer from a deficit of research investment across the sector.

Wow. Labour announce a windfall tax on the big polluters to create a million skilled jobs in renewable energy, insulating homes, reforesting the country and making new electric vehicles.

We either let the climate emergency destroy us - or we build a new society #LabourManifesto
That nurses who look after our sick, teachers who educate our children, firefighters who risk their lives for us have been punished for the bankers' crash with real terms pay cuts is a national disgrace.

So Labour's commitment to restore their pay is a big deal. #LabourManifesto
Young people are currently punished with debt for daring to dream of a university education that all of society benefits from.

Education is a social good and a right - and the big businesses who profit from a trained workforce should pay for it. #LabourManifesto
