Yesterday, I joined @MomsDemand and @StudentsDemand volunteers in Indianapolis at the statehouse to demand change and advocate for lifesaving policies to address a gun violence epidemic that's now the leading killer of kids and teens in the US🧵
Ten years ago, after 26 children and educators were murdered at Sandy Hook School, I started @MomsDemand at my kitchen counter in Zionsville, Indiana. What started out as a Facebook post became the largest grassroots organization in the country.
The tiny seed of hope I felt 10 years ago when mothers and others stepped up to join us has grown with every chapter, every advocacy day, every good law we’ve passed, every bad bill we’ve stopped, and every gun sense candidate we’ve helped elect.

NEW: Neighbors who saw a toddler in diapers wandering around a Beech Grove, Indiana, apartment complex with a loaded handgun called police. The incident was caught on building cameras. The father - who lied that he didn’t own a gun - was arrested. #inlegis dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…
Last year - over the objections of police and Hoosiers - Indiana lawmakers passed permitless carry, which allows people to have easy access to guns without a background check or safety training. Data shows the law increases gun crime and death. #inlegis fox59.com/news/indycrime…

BREAKING: The Indiana House has voted to ban abortion in Indiana. SB 1 is expected to get final approval by the Senate today.

SB 1 will force women and other people who can become pregnant into second-class status in the state of Indiana.
Indiana is poised to become the first state in the country to pass a new abortion ban since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

SB 1 will force Hoosiers to carry pregnancies against their will. This bill ignores the majority of Hoosiers who support abortion access.
The impact of restricting abortion access will fall hardest on people who already face systemic racism & barriers to health care access.

Given Indiana’s maternal mortality crisis, we know that banning abortion puts the lives of pregnant Hoosiers at risk — especially Black women.

Indiana legislators are putting the health and safety of Hoosier women at risk, and again surrendering to the demands of a small group of anti-abortion extremists.

If anyone had doubts that the end goal is an all-out ban on abortion, today’s amendments to SB 1 made that clear.
The few exceptions that had been included in SB 1 were essentially stripped, ignoring the opinion of the majority of Hoosiers who believe individuals should have the freedom to decide if and when to have children. #BansOffIndiana #INLegis
From its very inception, the Indiana Constitution has contained the right to privacy, implicit in this right is the right for a woman and her doctor to make medical decisions regarding reproductive health.

Indiana's special legislative session is underway, and banning abortion is on the table.

Here’s what you need to know. 🧵
Legislators are convening today to begin hearings on Senate Bill 1 — a cruel, dangerous bill that would ban abortion in Indiana, forcing Hoosiers to carry a pregnancy against their will.
The Indiana legislature is the first in the country to convene for a special session following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, which gave state legislators the green light to restrict abortion access.

Banning abortion puts Hoosiers’ health and safety at risk.

🧵 #inlegis Rep. Jim Lucas calls a story about Black Hoosiers expressing concern over weakening laws and gun violence “garbage”.

Lucas will tell you he’s not a racist. He is.

Let’s explore the facts from the article (also available here: indystar.com/story/news/loc…)

#LucasMustGo
Here’s some facts from the article which Rep Lucas calls “garbage”:

When the city counted its 100th homicide in June, 81% were a result of gunshots, according to Indianapolis Metropolitan Police data, and 74% of those killed were Black.
This tracks with data from 2020, where 183 Black victims accounted for 74.69% of total homicides.

Nearly 40% of Indiana's Black residents live in Indianapolis according to Census data.

I first taught The Diary of Anne Frank to 8th graders in the mid-2000s.

When I started the unit, I addressed the Holocaust as if the students had foundational knowledge. Imagine my surprise when a student asked me, “Wait, what are you talking about?”
There were several students in my class who had never heard of the Holocaust. At 13, they had never been taught about what actually happened. Instead, it was just a word they had heard without much knowledge.
That evening, I scrambled to find as much as I could to supplement, including a super helpful teaching aide that helped me deliver the necessary background knowledge the kids needed in order to comprehend this moment in history.

Debate begins in Indiana House on final vote on bill limiting employer #vaccinemandates.
House Majority Leader Matt Lehman: "This bill is not about the vaccine itself; it's about the people affected" by mandates. #INLegis
Lehman points to nurses who testified they fear getting fired for being unvaxed, after working for 9 months of pandemic before #vaccine became available.

Last week's #SCOTUS ruling means those nurses aren't affected by this bill; they're still required to get vaxed or get fired.

Here we go folks, now it’s time to talk about Permitless Carry.

There are 7 Permitless Carry bills in the #inlegis this year. All do the same basic things, and they’re all bad policy.

HB1369 is probably the one that will advance—the 3 authors are on the Public Policy Committee.
Here’s why Permitless Carry is a bad idea, especially in Indiana.

Our permitting system for who is allowed to carry a loaded, concealed handgun in public is already weak.

A 5 year permit is free (as of July 2020), except for a small fee attached to a fingerprint check.
That’s it.

A lifetime license carries a one time fee and the fingerprint check, but then one can carry for life beginning at age 18.

Other states, like Delaware, require training in safety (including the benefits of safe storage), live fire, and conflict resolution.

House Majority Leader @mjlehman23: expect staggered entry to House chamber on Tuesday's #INLegis #OrganizationDay. No plans to pass any bills that day.
Lehman: rules governing entry into statehouse itself will be handled by executive branch, Department of Administration. Witnesses for committee hearings likely to testify remotely. Conference committee procedures, which start in April, still TBD.

An #INLegis study committee is holding its first meeting to discuss how to hold the next session if the #CoronavirusPandemic is still raging. The Constitution requires the legislature to meet, but Rep. Matthew Lehman, who's chairing the panel, says there's flexibility on how.
Of the 6 committee members, Sen. @JD4IN29 is participating virtually. Sen. @cpgarten is unmasked but keeping double the recommended distance from the other four legislators in the room, who are masked up.
Lehman notes there's a paradox: #INLegis can decide to meet virtually, but would first have to meet in person to pass that bill. That would likely happen in the 1-day organizational session in November, which normally is just ceremonial.

At least 7 counties are still tallying mail-in ballots: Marion, Hamilton, Boone, LaPorte, Porter, Monroe, St. Joseph.

Boone and Monroe have released no totals so far; they plan to announce their results all at once. Monroe expects a count later today; likely tomorrow in Boone.
Missing counties leave at least two #INLegis races in limbo. No results yet for the seat of retiring Sen. Mark Stoops (D-Bloomington), which is entirely within Monroe County; 3-way race includes @ZodyforIN and @shelliyoder. #INPrimary 2/
Indy Rep. @shedop appears to be the lone #INLegis incumbent at risk of losing her primary, trailing former State Board of Accounts auditor John Jacob by 159 votes. Marion County has as many as 78K ballots still to count, but only a fraction of those would be in that district. 3/
