#Toxicnewsrooms? Ask me. I saw someone literally die in front of me. He suffered a massive heart attack and breathed his last in an e-rickshaw on way to LNJP. Before we talk about #toxicworkculture, first we need to understand what is a #toxicworkplace. @IndEditorsGuildv
“...a workplace that is marked by significant infighting, where personal battles often harm productivity. Toxic workplaces are often considered the result of toxic employers and/or toxic employees who are motivated by personal gain (power, money, fame, or special status)

Unveiling the Paradox: Do Statins Fuel the Fire of Heart Disease?

This is a deep dive 🧵into the mechanistic relationship between statins and coronary heart disease.

#statins #CVD #heartdisease #cholesterol #mitochondria Image
The ‘bad & good cholesterol hypothesis’ has lost its foundation.

Although lowering the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio is possible with drugs such as statins, this is not effective in preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD).
Proxy measurements such as LDL-C are a breeding ground for scientific arrogance.

Does the measurement really mean what you think it means?

Have you looked into the assumptions that connect the proxy and the real thing?

Let's dig in.

The anti-inflammatory effects of #exercise: mechanisms and implications for the prevention and treatment of disease 🧵

nature.com/articles/nri30… Image
2. Physical inactivity is linked to various health problems like #type2diabetes, #heartdisease, #cancer, and more. This is partly because of the accumulation of visceral fat, which triggers #inflammation in the body and promotes the development of these diseases.
3. Exercise has been found to have a protective effect against these chronic inflammation-related diseases, thanks to its anti-inflammatory effect. Regular exercise can reduce visceral fat mass and create an anti-inflammatory environment in the body.

#JoeRogan @joerogan and @DrAseemMalhotra misled you again, willfully, on vaccine myocarditis and statins, on the Joe Rogan show. Here, I explain how. 🧵
#vaccineswork #myocarditis #HeartDisease
One part of his presentation focuses on statins, and the controversy surrounding his project with Abramson/ Malhotra et al about the risk/ benefit ratio of statins. As a quick recap, statins are intended to lower cholesterol, and Malhotra's position is that...
as many people as possible should stop their statins and focus on exercise. This narrative is as usual based upon distortions of the evidence, and normal cardiologists don't need to distort the evidence to make their point.

Analysis of data from >30 million people finds that one in ten early deaths could be prevented if everyone managed at least half the @NHSuk recommended level of physical activity.

Dr Leandro Garcia and colleagues report today in @BJSM_BMJ.

@NHSuk @BJSM_BMJ @SorenBrage @The_MRC @tessastraining @Cambridge_Uni @CamBioCampus @PA_Researcher @LGAWellbeing @SedBehaviourRN Physical activity reduces the risk of #heartdisease & #cancer.

#NHS recommend adults do at least 150 minutes moderate-intensity activity - e.g. brisk walking or slow cycling - or 75 minutes vigorous-intensity activity – e.g. running, swimming or fast cycling - a week.

(2/8)
To examine how differing levels of physical activity alter the risk of heart disease, cancer and premature death, the researchers looked at data from 94 large cohort studies, totaling more than 30 million participants.

The link between metabolic health and heart disease has been shown in countless studies.

The positive findings have been that metabolic health can manage or prevent heart disease.

It starts with understanding the basics:
2/

Many cases of #HeartDisease occur because of damaged blood vessels. Weak vessels are correlated with poor metabolic health.

Metabolic syndrome is a precursor to cardiac arrest.

2 factors that harm blood vessels: blood sugar and inflammation.
3/

If your body can’t properly reduce sugar from the bloodstream, you’ll experience #InsulinResistance. Cells can no longer swell to accommodate excess sugar, and stop responding to higher insulin.

The result is narrowed vessels and restricted blood flow.

New report warns 500 million people will develop #heartdisease, #obesity, #diabetes and other diseases if they don't increase their physical activity.

2) . The Global Status Report on Physical Activity 2022 warned that if the 194 countries surveyed do not take urgent action, the cost of illnesses will total U.S. $27 billion a year between 2020 and 2030.
3) work done by the Health Finance Institute @HealthFinInst has "continuously shown that each dollar invested in chronic disease risk factor prevention such as reduction of physical inactivity yields returns up to seven times of the dollar invested."

Today should have been my big brother's 47th Birthday. But he died of coronary heart failure.

If you have a history of heart disease in your family, it's especially important to know the symptoms and what to do. And if you're having symptoms, it's a game of minutes. Do NOT wait to call an ambulance. Every minute counts. #HeartDisease #HeartAttack mayoclinic.org/diseases-condi…
Also, I feel the need to say this: My brother never smoked, did not drink, exercised regularly, was not overweight nor did he have diabetes. He had a super healthy diet too. But he was always stressed.

Stress is not worth your life. It's the thing we do not talk about enough.

Cardiovascular disease is one of the most prevalent diseases in the developed world.

One of the scariest things about #heartdisease is that it is often a silent killer, with few to no outward symptoms.
2/9
As one of my medical school professors liked to point out, the most common "presentation" of the disease is a sudden, fatal heart attack. You know the patient has heart disease because he has just died from it.
3/9
And while mortality rates from those first, surprise heart attacks have dropped significantly thanks to improvements in basic cardiac life support and time-sensitive interventions, such attacks are still fatal roughly 1/3 of the time.

"We wanted to help find ways to identify high-risk #COVID19 patients as early — who are likely to become severely ill and which hospitalized patients are likely to get worse quickly," said study researcher John M Higgins from the Massachusetts General Hospital in the US.

My journey to my #PhD program was an absolute #strugglebus. I graduated with a 2.75 GPA from @GeorgiaTech. Most grad applicants have a 3.5 or higher. #Yikes

I applied anyway 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ (I didn't get admitted into any programs - post bacc, M.S., or PhD) #AcademicChatter
Fortunately, my mentor @RaquelLieberman gave me the opportunity to work as a #research technician in her lab for 2 yrs to gain the experience I needed for grad school.

This is when I first started studying essential pathways that we could disrupt to kill disease causing bacteria
After working in her lab for almost 2 years..I reapplied again. This time I felt VERY confident I was ready for the #PhD.

I was denied admission to every single grad program I applied to (including the one I'm in now).
