Para empezar, recordemos que los huesos de los santos (reliquias) tuvieron una gran importancia desde la tardoantiguedad. Durante la Edad Media se produjo un boom en su culto, llegando a desmembrar los cuerpos de los santos para poder repartir sus reliquias, que eran tesoros.
Por eso era importante saber dónde estaba su tumba. A veces era muy sencillo, porque el santo había sido enterrado en un lugar relacionado con el sitio en el que vivió. Por ejemplo, la tradición cuenta que san Millán fue enterrado en la misma cueva en la que rezaba como ermitaño
