Here we go! The Missouri House is hearing a series of bills that would gut the Citizen Initiative Petition process, a process that has frequently been used by Missourians to override our "they know better than us" members of the #MOLeg 🧵
Missourians wanted to expand Medicaid, but our @MissouriGOP #immoralmajority was opposed; so we passed it via Initiative Petition (and they still tried to defund it afterwards). Missourians legalized medical (and now recreational) marijuana through I.P.
The chair is starting out this hearing by having every member introduce themselves, say a little about who they are, and what party they represent. It's actually kinda touching in a Parks & Recs way.

It is #ByDesign that certain areas of #Brookline and other Boston metro communities continue to exclude poorer people. Minimum lot sizes, apartment bans, parking minimums, all of these serve to drive up the expense for would be neighbors. 3/n

On the morning of May 30, 2021, the last day to pass bills in the TX House in the 87th Legislative Session, House Dems faced near certain defeat against our voters & democracy w/the passage of SB 7.

My colleague @TMFtx pulled me aside & said: “I know the play to break quorum.”1
On that bill deadline day @TMFtx continued: “We break quorum, fly to Washington & tell Congress to pass the #JohnLewisVotingRightsAct.”

Always game for #GoodTrouble, I said: “Yeah, let’s do THAT!” 2/

Fannie Lou Hamer deserves R-E-S-P-E-C-T in many ways. Americans (including Mississippians who shamefully aren't usually taught about her in K-12) should know her story as well as they know Dr. King's.
Imagine being a Black woman in 1964 Mississippi (ruled by segregationists Dixiecrats) creating an alternative MS Freedom Democratic Party, traveling to the DNC & demanding that THEIR Black delegates be seated instead of white Dixiecrats.

I know the left and right these days have a lot of white dudes (usually from the midwest or northeast) that they call anti-establishment warriors.

But Fannie Lou Hamer WAS the anti-establishment. And she risked her life to fight an unjust establishment.

LATE NIGHT THOUGHTS: Texas Republicans rammed through the process without regard for rules or regular process to justify “election integrity,” after the Texas Secretary of State called the 2020 election, “free, fair, safe and secure.” #txlege #JimCrow2_0 #SB7
So what does the Texas Attorney General do in response to that? He exhausted 22,000 staff hours and spent $250k in a desperate attempt to find some evidence of widespread voter fraud. So, do you want to know what the result of this “investigation” was?
After all that effort, hours, and spending of YOUR taxpayer dollars, the Attorney General only identified 16 problem ballots out of ELEVEN MILLION votes casted, all of which were simple human errors. That’s 1 in 700,000.

Happy Black History Month!

Day 1:
I started the day by explaining to my kindergarteners the history of BHM and why we celebrate. We also talked about Ruby Bridges and how her impact is felt today in our diverse classroom and at our school.
Day 2:
We talked about the Greensboro sit-ins. This also led to a discussion about protests and why people protest. I like to highlight the sit-ins during BHM because those involved were incredibly brave!

Talking about events in Black history can be heavy but it’s still important to learn. Not all BH is sad though and today’s lesson was inspired by watching my kids dance! We talked about DJ Kool Herc, the history of breakdancing and I read the story The Story of Rap. ImageImage
