For anyone who missed it, here is my thread of excess deaths in Australia to the end of May 2022
First off, the ABS provisional mortality statistics show a breakdown by age/gender. But the age groups are very broad (0-44, 45-64, 65-74, 75-84, 85+). So there could be trends occurring within the age bands that are hidden when grouped together.
Our latest estimates of excess deaths are out, covering all cause mortality to the end of May 2022, plus COVID-19 only mortality for Jun-Aug.

Total excess mortality for March 2022 estimated at 6% (+800 deaths).
Almost half of the excess is due to doctor-certified COVID-19 deaths. Other unspecified causes and coroner-referred deaths (which includes some COVID-19 deaths) also made a significant contribution.

Total excess mortality for the first two months of 2022 is estimated to be 15% (+4,000 deaths); 18% in January and 13% in February. Importantly, this is measured relative to expected mortality had there been no pandemic.
Over the two months, 10% of excess mortality is due due to COVID-19 alone (+2,500 deaths)

The online registrations data showed 6,67,900 & 6,93,800 deaths in 2018 and 2019 : 63.9% & 66.6% of the CRS' (2019) numbers. Plus some 6 districts had inconsistent data in 2018 and 2019. To come up with a clearer "excess deaths" estimate, we omitted them for adjustment (2/n)
If excess deaths were adjusted based on the % availability of data for 2018 & 2019 & re-calculated for the State (without the six omitted districts), the estimate increased to 3,10,727 deaths corresponding to a multiple of 4.1 over the official death toll of 75,877. (3/n)
