Disheartening how little regard there is for consent in the medical-health-data community. For example this new study looking into suicide "prediction". This is a #BigProblem #MentalHealth #BioInformatics #DigitalPhenotyping #Suicidology #DataEthics nature.com/articles/s4174…
2/ In this study, with MASSIVE personal health datasets provided by Kaiser Permanente @kpthrive, HealthPartners @_HealthPartners , Henry Ford Health System @HenryFordHealth the researchers applied models (including "neural" network) to try to predict suicidal risk.
3/ Spoiler alert it didn't really work (comment: maybe put resources on things we already know work, like human connection & actual care & support?). Sadly, this result will probably just cause more effort to "improve" modeling. This is about $, making it & cost-cutting it.

Gartner 's predictions for #Data & #Analytics for 2023: A Thread
1. By 2026, 5% of workers will routinely use AI
against their employer’s wishes to complete
tasks. -> In the current #chatGPT world, we are already seeing this happening.

2. By 2026, 20% of top #data science teams will
have rebranded as #Cognitive #Science

- Moving forward skills will become less tool-centric as platforms are innovating every day
Expect professionals from psychology, commerce, arts, and people management to join data teams.

What's often left out of the conversation about #CrisisLines and #DataEthics, is the #volunteers. The focus is naturally on persons experiencing crisis. Rightly so, but volunteers make the conversations happen & can be exploited also.I asked #CrisisTextLine whether they took..
..the position that volunteers have provided consent for research on the conversations. They wouldn't answer the question or even confirm receiving it. They know what they're doing and do it anyway. #BusinessModel

Finally, the #GoldacreReview is published! (During Parliamentary Easter holidays, mid-ping-pong on the #HealthAndCareBill...)

It's 221 pages - each PDF page is a double page spread - so this could be a lo-o-o-ong [Thread].

Here goes...
First point to note, in the Terms of Reference (p5), is that this is about "access to #NHSdata by #researchers, #commissioners, and #innovators" - i.e. #Planning and #CommercialReUse - so it is directly relevant to the operation of millions of people's #NationalDataOptOuts... Terms of reference for the review 1. How do we facilitate a
"185 wide-ranging recommendations for us to explore", says @sajidjavid (p6). Gulp! Time for some coffee...

"systems that ensure #underrepresented groups are well represented" may (partly) refer to this "landmark review", which got off to a slow start:

Image

I cleared my schedule in anticipation of 2nd jab side-effects, and I’m aching all over with muscle pains, so it’s just the right time to channel my inner grumpy old man (I’m moving like one anyway).
In other words:
🔹Time to critique #ESTRO2021 abstracts! 🔹
#radonc #medphys
Standard disclaimer:
I’m just one abstract reviewer. My opinions and dislikes may not be representative.
I’m not targeting any specific authors - so even if you feel this hits too close to home, it’s probably not you that I’m thinking of (five other people did the same!)
I reviewed clinical track abstracts this year, while my previous involvement has been on the physics track. That's obviously colouring my experience.
(I am but a lowly physicist, etc, etc ... 😂)

So @cabinetofficeuk (@GDSTeam) has updated the #DataEthicsFramework for government and the public sector today - the first version of which was published by @MattHancock in 2018, when he was at @DCMS:
gov.uk/government/pub…

Two obvious questions:

1) Where are the published...
...ratings for all of the government & public sector data projects / programmes that have been started since 2018?

A framework that neither demands nor provides publicly visible outputs surely fails on two of its own 'overarching principles'; #transparency and #accountability...
2) Other than "consult with your team leader", what happens when a project 'fails' the framework - say a national programme that doesn't do a #DPIA, or a body that employs a #discriminatory #algorithm?

An 'ethics' framework without meaningful #consequences ain't #ethical at all.

This article frames Palantir - providers of the NHSX data store - as a disruptive *defense* contractor not a Silicon Valley unicorn. vox.com/recode/2020/7/…
Now why is a defense contractor working with the NHS? Something something exceptional times, but a public-health emergency isn’t actually a war, is it? Except Cummings’ fascination with military-born innovation is a known-known, eg the term “skunkworks” was invented by Lockheed.
Here’s a quote from Palantir CEO about why the additional scrutiny of going to IPO might not be worth the trouble: “you need a lot of creative, wacky people that maybe Wall Street won’t understand”. Now, what does that remind me of?

Job! Head of the No 10 Analytical Unit. Offering direct counsel to the PM, so would be wonderful for everyone in the UK if this job went to someone who knows and cares about #dataethics and algorithmic justice. Civil service job but open to external candidates. ImageImage
Rather awkwardly described as a pseudo start-up, which presumably means there’s no existing infra and they’ll be using OKRs, not that they’ll be scrabbling for VC cash. (Although, who knows?)
Also, can’t link to the job ad in a tweet with other text because the URL has 250 characters. (Link incoming.) Image
