We got it done in 2021, reducing the child poverty rate by almost half, according to @CenterOnBudget. Now, we need to make it permanent.

Before 2020, 1 in 6 Black children were living below the poverty line. In 2021, thanks to the CTC, that number was 1 in 12 -- which is still outrageous.

The business community is pressing Congress to pass corporate tax cuts– undoing provisions of the Trump tax law that offset some of the cost of huge corporate rate cuts. The #ChildTaxCredit is a far higher priority & certainly no corporate tax cuts should proceed w/o the #CTC.
As the success of the #AmericanRescuePlan showed, a high rate of child poverty is a policy choice. The year-end tax negotiations are the time when policymakers should choose to lower child poverty, not push it higher.
I know facts can be stubborn, but one of the very first plans I released in this campaign was a plan to make things more affordable for Missourians.

We need to prevent another supply chain crisis like the baby formula shortage. We must prevent the next crisis by investing in American manufacturing, breaking up corporate monopolies, and ensuring our negotiated trade agreements allow for the quick import of basic necessities.
We need to increase support for American farmers and bring food prices down. This year, American farmers are slated to spend $40 billion more in farm production expenses, as compared to 2020. In the Senate, I will prioritize fixing supply chain issues that impact our farmers.
Census data released last week show that as the country and labor market continued to recover from the pandemic, a rapidly growing share of adults were working a substantial amount of the year.
The fact that this rise was similar for parents and non-parents alike should ease concerns that the monthly #ChildTaxCredit would cause large numbers of parents to choose not to work.
In fact, 2021 shows it’s possible for a historic rebound in steady work to coincide with a historic strengthening of government support that drove a record decline in child poverty. Let’s look at the numbers.
HISTORIC GAINS FOR CHILDREN: Today’s @uscensusbureau data show that the expanded #ChildTaxCredit drove a record-breaking drop in child poverty in 2021.

Predicted but no less stunning decline (9.7% to 5.2%) in child poverty (using Census Bureau's preferred alternative poverty measure) from 2020-2021 driven largely by enhanced #ChildTaxCredit, which Congress failed to extend.
No single transfer program did more to keep children--5.3 million people overall, a majority of whom were children--out of poverty in 2021 than the enhanced #ChildTaxCredit
We achieved the lowest child poverty rate (under the Census Bureau's Supplemental Poverty Measure, which accounts for tax credits) on record, thanks largely to the #AmericanRescuePlan's now-expired enhanced #ChildTaxCredit. Congress should find a way to renew this policy ASAP.

Workers only hit their peak earnings years between 35 and 54. So young parents tend to have fewer financial resources to invest in their child’s needs.
Parents of young children tend to be young themselves and are less stable financially.
But telling parents they have to wait until they have kids until they are financially stable isn't the answer here. That would have negative impacts on families and society.

Economic insecurity was widespread even prior to the pandemic. 1 in 4 households couldn’t afford adequate food, shelter, or utilities at some point between 2014-2016.
Insecurity went well beyond households that had incomes below the #poverty line. Many middle-income households couldn’t pay their bills in at least one year, sometimes because their incomes fell or costs rose.

Before we dig into our review of 2021, let’s set the stage—for why anyone outside Wisconsin should care about this state in the first place. Simply put: what happens in politics here shapes the course of the nation.
Wisconsin is the most evenly divided state in the country. 4 of the last 6 presidential elections have come down to less than 1%. In 2020, President Biden won WI by 20,682 votes—a 0.6% margin. In 2018, Gov Evers won by 1.1% As a result, every election here is a titanic battle.
I’m the House sponsor of the #BuildBackBetter Act, and I can tell you that Joe Manchin’s reasons for opposing this legislation are complete BS. I don’t know if he doesn’t get it or just doesn’t care, but the American people will pay the price.
Senator Manchin will sleep tonight not worrying about how to pay for childcare or care for an elderly relative. He won’t suffer when the #ChildTaxCredit runs out or China buries our budding green job sector.
If Senator Manchin sticks to today’s statement, nearly every West Virginia family will suffer. Most Americans will suffer.
