Die CWC war einerseits sehr erfolgreich bei der Vernichtung vorhandener chemischer Waffen. Seit ihrem Inkrafttreten sind weit über 90 % aller Lagerbestände an chemischen Waffen weltweit vernichtet worden.
Andererseits sehen Fachleute die Gefahr einer Rückkehr der C-Waffen.

In den letzten zehn Jahren gab es diverse Vorfälle mit Chemischen Waffen, nicht zuletzt im Syrischen Bürgerkrieg. Der Chemiewaffeneinsatz ist nie richtig geahndet worden. Dann gab es Attentate mit Nervengasen, plus ein paar Verdachtsfälle, u.a. auch 2014 in der Ukraine.

@OPCW Central Nervous System-Acting Chemicals: At the 96th Executive Council, the Council recommend a vote take place during CSP-26 to agree that the aerosolized use of CNS-acting chem by law enforcement shouldn’t be considered a permitted riot control tool under the CWC. (2/7)

#SecurityCouncil members must put differences aside and enforce the Resolution 2118(2013). Turkey supports efforts within @OPCW towards full compliance. We strongly condemn the repeated use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime against its own people.

1. Syria has destroyed the two chlorine cylinders from the April 7 attack on Douma. This is clearly destruction of evidence. Syria prevented @OPCW from bringing the cylinders to The Hague last year for analysis and then destroyed them in secret. Not suspicious at all!
2. Syria has reported that one of its declared former chemical weapon production facilities has been subject to some kind of attack. This is one of the facility's that Syria claims never produced and/or weaponized CW even though @OPCW has forensic evidence to the contrary.

The day after Syria declared in breach of #CWC and its rights and privileges under the treaty were suspended, @OPCW identified a new problem with Syria's CW declaration. For those of you following along at home, this is the 20th outstanding issue with Syria's declaration.
In its 91st monthly progress report on elimination of Syrian CW, @OPCW reports that it has evidence that Syrian CW site produced CW despite Syrian denials. Not only that, samples of CW agent were found in several large containers. Kicker: the agent itself was undeclared.
Note that @OPCW did not say it found degradation products or by-products of production--they found actual CW agent. Samples were taken in September 2020 but no indication of when the production itself took place. Another important question is the identity of the undeclared agent

According to reports, Congress's interim chief #SoniaGandhi is expected to step down from the position ahead of the CWC meeting on Monday. This comes after a letter of dissent, dated Aug 7 & signed by more than 20 leaders seeking "full time, visible leadership" became public.
"Sonia Gandhi should continue as long as she wants; Rahul Gandhi should take over after her as he is fully competent," Punjab CM @capt_amarinder opined along with a section of top leaders, like @bhupeshbaghel and @ashokgehlot51 who said she must continue as the party chief.
As per sources, a stormy #CWC session expected with the party currently being divided into those who will ask for Sonia Gandhi to stay on & those who want the overhaul of structures & resolution of "collective leadership".
