India is a sovereign country. Every country maintains a right to control its borders & the government decides who comes enters, who stays for how long & which documents are necessary for the alien visitors to provide.

Our country has had a long history of continuous invasion & barbaric subjugation of the natives through forced conversions, beheadings, rapes, kidnapping, destruction of our places of worship, etc. #CAA_NRC_NPR

The #CAB is a decoy. It's a red herring - that was bound to cause #CAAProtests to errupt to draw attention away from #NRCBill. CAB is to NRC what the #Dataprotectionbill is to #Aadhaar. The real danger is from Aadhaar. Like it is from NRC. @Stupidosaur?
To everyone who may eventually rea this, I wanted to help those not in India understand what #CAA or #CAB is and why many parts of India are rising in protest, leading to a suppression of dissent using police force, which may or may not be reported on in the press.
The government of the nationalist, Right-wing party carried out an exercise in the Indian state of Assam where they drew up a Citizen's List. Anyone who didn't appear on the list had to then appear before tribunals and prove that they *were* citizens of India. (2)
Ostensibly done to weed out illegal immigrants, it was widely perceived as an anti-Muslim exercise, designed to disenfranchise Muslim citizens, in keeping with the Hindutva (or Hindu supremacist) ideals of the ruling party, on the strength of which it roared into power. (3)
My own position on #CAA2019 has been - it is sound in principle (read @pratimbose article👇) and nothing wrong constitutionally (as explained by none other than Harish Salve). But, I anticipate serious issues in implementation. Therefore, other than the #NorthEast #CABProtests /2

There’s a huge difference between an “anti-immigration” sentiment of the bigoted kind by a powerful majority and the resistance to immigration by people whose autonomy over their own land has been historically undermined by people they consider outsiders or oppressors.
For instance, the "anti-immigrant" sentiment among white Europeans against immigrants from countries they had colonized and continue to plunder is bigotry. Or in India- where Muslim citizens are framed as outsiders or immigrants.
#CAB After discussion w friend @sumanbery, I see 2 genuine, debatable issues wrt CAB. Shouid (1) religious minorities be defined by common world view or accept PakConstitution's defn of Ahmadi as non-Muslim (2) Religous minorities from Sri Lanka,Nepal, Bhutan be covered by CAB
2/ Reasonable ppl cn hv diff views on these 2 issues. I would reject the 2nd on Geoploitical & pragmatic grounds, ignoring logical consistency. I am torn on 1st issue bcs in World's eyes Ahamadi are part of Muslim majority, but in Pakistan they are a declared minority since 1974
3/ There's no logical connection btwn CAB & NRC.The existence or not of a CAB has no relevance to what will or not happen to NRC, which was directed by a Supreme Court judgement/direction decades ago & has been held in limbo bcs of implementation difficulties(now visible in Assam
