Part 2 of @AsianAllies Student Series included honouring the story of 14 yo #EmmettTill & looking at systemic issues that affect Blk folks. Asian students at @MiddlefieldCI were invited to challenge the ways in which they were privileged & consider being an ally for Blk students.
Some @YRDSB students’ comments & questions: We only learn about Western/white histories in History class!? Asians & Blk characters are quickly killed off on TV shows & movies. What kind of Asian are we talking about? The systems have situated Blk folks to face such circumstances!
It was exciting for me & @JoanneTangYRDSB to know that a number of @MiddlefieldCI students were now feeling: shocked, informed & more aware of #AntiBlackRacism. We hope they continue the #asianalliesconvo & take up the responsibility of being better allies.✊🏼💪🏼 #BlackHistoryMonth
This #BlackHistoryMonth we recognize a critical movement in breaking through racial inequity: the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Negro National League, a place where Black & Hispanic players could play their trade while MLB barred them because of the color of their skin
These teams quickly grew in popularity and rivaled the skill of white leagues. PA’s own Pittsburgh Crawfords gained attention through winning nine titles and producing all-star players like Satchel Paige, Cool Papa Bell and Oscar Charleston.
Negro League Baseball paved the way for Jackie Robinson to be recruited by the MLB, with others soon following. To this day, baseball continues to be America’s pastime – no matter a player’s background or color of their skin, we are all Americans. #OTD #BlackHistoryMonth2020

History has taught me to be a better friend & educator. I don’t believe in letting go of the past, as the past has shaped who we are & how we live. While we may believe we have all the choices in the world, we are restricted by systems & attitudes that we dont think about enough.

The Ku Klux Klan began a campaign of terrorism against freed Blacks in Florida.
Josiah, already a community leader, was unafraid. At the urging of his party, he ran for Congress.
His opponent? A former slave owner and a Confederate army veteran.

Um, should I be offended that the theme of UW’s #BlackHistoryMonth2020 is Afrofuturism: B(l)ack to the Future & literally no one asked me to participate in any of the month-long series of events on a topic I literally wrote a book on?
I think it’s mostly student organized. I truly am not taking it personally. I mean, I’m on leave & traveling a bunch this month anyway. But I saw the announcement & was like...
People told me they saw the theme and assumed I was involved. Nope. Not at all. Literally found out about the theme three days into Black History Month. 🤷🏾♀️

Georgia Gilmore is shown here at Holt Street Baptist Church. She was fired from her job at the National Lunch Company for supporting the bus boycott. Big mistake! It freed her up to do more.
She founded the Club from Nowhere, a group of women who cooked and sold their sandwiches, chicken dinners, pound cake, and sweet tea to fund the Montgomery Improvement Association (the Montgomery Boycott) She was the only named officer to protect the other members.

Happy Black History Month! In 1926, Carter G. Woodson (b.1875-d.1950) started "Negro History Week" which laid the foundation for Black History Month. He also founded @ASALH and the @JAAHistory. Give them a follow to support and continue his legacy!

A bit more about Carter G. Woodson:
He was born to formerly enslaved parents. He couldn't begin a consistent formal education until he was almost 20. Yet in 1912 he became the second African American (after W.E.B. Du Bois) to graduate Harvard with a PhD.

Carter G. Woodson published his best-known book, "The Miseducation of the Negro" in 1933. In it he locates the problem of "miseducation" as one that emboldens the oppressor and indoctrinates the oppressed with a sense of inferiority.
