FYI... if I cut you off and finish your sentence it is NOT my intention to be rude or disrespectful. Subconsciously, my brain genuinely believes that doing this is a sign that I am LISTENING and I UNDERSTAND what you are saying... and it is 100% automatic and unintentional.
So, it took me a long while to figure out why I do this. It's 100% meant to let the other person know I am listening and understand what they are saying. Almost like my brain wants to prove that I'm paying attention.
I feel like this is along similar lines of sharing a personal story to explain to the other person that I have gone through similar things and understand what they are going through.

Bonus crap points for using the words "dealing with", when talking about the perspective of an Autism mom.
The only "dealing with" that should be discussed in terms of autism awareness, is all of the nonsense we have to deal with from non-autistics.

1) I love big data and I cannot lie.
I am not a statistician. It is not heavy duty maths.

For the love of god. Letting us assert our own genders is some of the most basic control you can give us over our own lives.

April is a month when allistic people are the loudest in speaking over Autistic voices; when Autistic ppl watch progress unravel while being bombarded by people with good intentions & able1$t impacts who double down on the harm they cause instead of letting Autistic people lead.
April is a month of able1$t puzzle pieces, functioning labels, pseudoscience, talks of "cures", vaccine disinformation, "epidemic" fearmongering, Autism Speaks propaganda, tokenisation & exploitation of Autistic ppl, inspiration p0rn, saviourism, & more. Rinse & repeat each year.
Many people are pushing for the relabelling of #AutismAwarenessMonth to #AutismAcceptanceMonth, the reasoning being that we are past the need for awareness & that acceptance is more important.
I disagree. While well-intentioned, I believe that this perspective has a major flaw.

Because autism awareness spear-headed by non-Autistic people has been persistently more harmful than helpful, I get why many Autistic people want to distance themselves from the mainstream approach to autism "awareness". I'm one of those people!

When people say "We don't need autism awareness anymore, we're past that!" I have to ask: Awareness for whom?
True acceptance cannot come about unless awareness is done RIGHT. Awareness is still direly necessary, particularly for more marginalised demographics.

This is not me being rude, it is the truth. When everything you're told to do by the “experts” is the absolute worst thing you could be doing, the entire process will be difficult & the results cannot ever be what you are hoping for. The experts are the ones making your life hard
The truth is, when allowed to develop naturally, autistic people develop all the same skills that you have but in a different way. If you stunt our developmental process with training like ABA, you are preventing your child from developing into their adult brain. You're doing it.

her at her son’s school, sending signed copies, etc — but today we get to do one better. On today’s episode of Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum, we’re featuring Temple Grandin. In that episode, we hid a very special easter egg: the boy, CJ, who now gets to live on forever.

1. Oh was yesterday #AutismAwarenessDay? Dang. I missed it. Instead I stayed off of social Media and spent a lovely day with my #ActuallyAutistic family not waving jigsaw pieces around, turning blue or spreading misinformation around that makes money for charities.

You would think it would be a month about us, learning about us, coming to an understanding and maybe learning to have empathy for the #ActuallyAutistic, but - in general - that's not the case.

What happened on 11 February 2005?
If you’re LGBTQ and not autistic and opposed to autistic people using the word Pride bc you think it appropriates your struggle, I am going to need you to shut the fuck up and go educate yourself about autistic people, gender, and sexuality. It’s the same struggle. We’re you.
Autistic people do not have the same relationship to gender and sexuality that allistic people do because social constructs are not real to us. Interpreting the words the way they were originally defined, no autistic people are cis. We can’t be put in that box by default.
Lots of autistic people identify as cishet for the same reason lots of allistic queer and trans people did at one time - intense social pressure and not seeing any other options. Even many terms used in the queer community don’t fit us well. We are so alone.
April is #AutismAwarenessMonth and we need to show the world our pride in the autistic members of our community. We can't just acknowledge the differences within our community. We need to celebrate it.
