Thread on how much money clubs have already received after the Champions League 2022/23 group stage. Also includes estimates for English clubs in Europa League and Europa Conference League. Some assumptions made about the TV pool, but the figures should be reasonably accurate.
The Champions League accounts for the lion’s share of UEFA revenue with its €2.032 bln being nearly 3 times as much as the Europa League and Europa Conference combined (€700m). The difference is particularly stark in the UEFA coefficient (based on 10-year rankings).
Champions League overall prize money is 3.6 times the Europa League and 5.5 times the Europa Conference, but this varies by round. In general, the difference becomes smaller the further a club progresses, e.g. last 16 it’s 8x and 16x, while for the winners it’s only 2.3x and 4x.

#FCBarcelona have announced the signing of Rapinha from #LUFC for €58m, while a deal to acquire Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich for €50m is agreed in principle. The question is how can they possibly afford these players, given their well-documented financial problems?
Only last month president Joan Laporta compared #FCBarcelona to a patient who “was practically dead in financial terms”, while the vice-president for finance Eduard Romeu said that €500m was needed “to save the club”.
This was not surprising, given the magnitude of #FCBarcelona’s financial issues. Although things have moved on since the most recent accounts for the 2020/21 season, it’s worth reviewing these to explain why so many fans are scratching their head at this summer’s spending.

There have been a few analyses of football club debt published recently, which are at best misleading, if not downright incorrect. So it’s once again time to wheel out my explanation of why debt figures should be treated with caution, as there are so many different definitions.
For the purpose of this review I will take the 2020/21 audited accounts of those clubs featuring in the Deloitte Money League (with the exception of Zenit St Petersburg, where I have not managed to source the details).
At the narrowest extreme, we have just bank debt, but the broadest extreme covers total liabilities, which includes all financial obligations, including transfer debt, staff payables, tax liabilities, trade creditors, provisions, accrued expenses and even deferred income.

UEFA has published the revenue distributions for the Champions League and Europa League in the 2020/21 season. Although these are very close to the modelled figures that I have previously provided, I thought some people might like to have the final, official figures.
Unsurprisingly, the two Champions League finalists earned the most with winners #CFC and #runners-up MCFC receiving £105m and £104m respectively, followed by #RealMadrid and #PSG, both £96m, then #FCBayern £81m and #LFC £77m.
Clubs in the Europa League received a lot less with winners #Villarreal getting only £29m, followed by semi-finalists #AFC £26m and #ASRoma £21m, then #THFC £16m. Runners-up #MUFC earned £15m after dropping down from the Champions League, while #LCFC got £14m.

A year ago 12 clubs announced a European Super League (ESL) before fan protests led to a humiliating climbdown just days later. However, the factors that drove the 12 clubs to this deeply unpopular move largely remain. It’s still all about money: a combination of fear and greed.
There is little doubt that many of the 12 Super League clubs continue to face serious financial problems. To some extent, this helps explain why the “dirty dozen” would seek more revenue, but that certainly does not excuse their horribly ill-conceived plan.
It is somewhat ironic that these clubs lamented the perilous state of their finances while simultaneously claiming that they had all the answers. Their argument that the Super League would somehow benefit the wider football family should also be taken with a large pinch of salt.

Quick financial comparison of the clubs in this week’s Champions League quarter-finals. This is based on the most recent 2020/21 accounts, which were significantly impacted by COVID (with nearly all games played behind closed doors), but the differences are still instructive.
Based on revenue, a couple of ties appear to be mismatches, namely #FCBayern vs Villarreal and #LFC vs Benfica, while #MCFC also have a big advantage against #Atleti. The closest game on paper is #RealMadrid against #CFC.
It’s a similar story for wages where #FCBayern and #LFC pay almost four times as much as Villarreal and Benfica, while #MCFC wage bill is over £100m more than #Atleti. Interestingly, #RealMadrid and #CFC have almost identical wage bills.

Deloitte have published the 25th edition of their annual Football Money League, which ranks the world’s leading football clubs by revenue, this time covering the 2020/21 season. Some thoughts in the following thread.
Deloitte said that the Money League remains “the most contemporary and reliable independent analysis of the top clubs’ relative financial performance”, which is largely true, even though they had to re-issue this year’s report after initially mis-stating #Milan revenue.
Revenue has obviously been significantly impacted by COVID-19. Deloitte estimate that the Money league clubs have missed out on well over €2 bln of revenue over the 2019/20 and 2020/21 season as a result of the pandemic.

Me explico.

Given the importance of wage bills to the likely success of football clubs, I thought that it would be interesting to look at wages for the Big 5 European leagues in the 2019/20 season (the most recently published accounts). Some thoughts in the following thread.
As a technical note, I have converted wages from Euro denominated leagues to GBP using the 1.14 exchange rate from the Deloitte Money League. To facilitate comparison, I have provided figures for each league in both Euros and GBP, though the overviews are only in GBP.
In England the highest wage bill in 2019/20 was #MCFC £351m, followed by #LFC £326m, #MUFC £284m, #CFC £283m, #AFC £225m and #THFC £181m. It is worth noting that some clubs’ figures were inflated by changing their year-end date, which meant the accounts covered 13 months.

Paris Saint-Germain’s signing of Lionel #Messi from #FCBarcelona has come as a major surprise to the footballing world. This thread will look at the financial implications and explain how #PSG are likely to still be able to meet UEFA’s Financial Fair Play (FFP) targets.
Despite a €99m (15%) fall in revenue in 2020, partly due to the COVID pandemic, #PSG wage bill still rose €43m (12%) to €414m, the club’s highest ever. This was more than 3 times as much as the closest challenger in France, Lyon with €132m, representing 29% of Ligue 1 wages.
#PSG €414m wage bill is the second highest in Europe, only surpassed by #FCBarcelona €443m (before their La Liga salary cap challenges), but more than clubs like #MCFC €401m, #RealMadrid €378m, #LFC €371m, #FCBayern €340m, #MUFC €324m and #CFC €323m.

No sooner had a European Super League (ESL) been announced than the plans were shelved, at least for the time being, but what were the factors that drove the 12 breakaway clubs to this deeply unpopular move? As usual, it was all about money, a combination of fear and greed.
Whether football is broken is debatable, but there is little doubt that many of the 12 Super League clubs are facing serious financial problems. To some extent, this helps explain why the “dirty dozen” would seek more revenue, but does not excuse this horribly ill-conceived plan.
You don’t have to look too far to see the seriousness of the financial predicament with pre-tax losses of the 12 ESL clubs adding up to a worrying £667m, even before #LFC announce their results. Three of them lost more than £100m: #Milan £169m, #MCFC £125m and #FCBarcelona £112m.

After news of the European Super League broke, the estimated earnings of clubs from the Big Five leagues in the 2020/21 Champions League might seem a little bit “after the Lord Mayor’s show”, but here’s an analysis up to the semi-finals in any case.
I should emphasise that these figures can only be considered as indicative. They are based on UEFA’s revenue distribution guidelines, but also include estimates for the TV pool and rebates to broadcasters following losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on my assumptions, the top 10 TV earnings from the Champions League up to the semi-finals are: #PSG €109m, #RealMadrid €109m, #MCFC €104m, #CFC €101m, #FCBayern €92m, #LFC €88m, #FCBarcelona €84m, #Juventus €82m, #BVB €78m and #Atleti €74m.

Deloitte have published the 24th edition of their annual Football Money League, which ranks the world’s leading football clubs by revenue, this time covering the 2019/20 season. Some thoughts in the following thread.
The 2019/20 season was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a £1.0 bln (12%) fall in revenue of the top 20 Money League clubs from £8.2 bln to £7.2 bln. Broadcast and match day fell £822m (23%) and £227m (17%) respectively, though commercial rose £87m (3%).
In terms of Euros, match day fell €257m (17%) from €1.5 bln to €1.2 bln, driven by matches either being cancelled or played behind closed doors without fans. Match day revenue is largely derived from gate receipts (including ticket and corporate hospitality sales).

#FCBarcelona recent accounts revealed major debt challenges, but they also highlighted some issues around different definitions of debt, so this thread will take a look at these using 2019/20 accounts from selected clubs and explain why Barca might have more problems than others.
Note: the clubs covered in this review are just a few of those that have already published accounts for the 2019/20 season, so it is not a ranking table as such, but there is enough detail here to illustrate the points made.
At the narrowest extreme, we have just bank debt, but the broadest definition covers total liabilities, which includes all financial obligations, including transfer debt, staff payables, tax liabilities, trade creditors, provisions, accrued expenses and even deferred income.

This thread will look at debt at football clubs, focusing on the Premier League Big Six. The fundamental question is whether this debt is too high, but the answer is complicated by the numerous definitions of debt, all of which can be valid #AFC #CFC #LFC #MCFC #MUFC #THFC
At the narrowest extreme, we have just bank debt, but the broadest extreme covers total liabilities, which includes all financial obligations, including transfer debt, tax liabilities, trade creditors, provisions for future losses, accrued expenses and even deferred income.
The net debt reported in an English club’s financial statement is in line with IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) and essentially covers purely financial obligations, such as overdrafts, bank loans, bonds, shareholder loans and finance leases less cash.
