Are you familiar with how MLAT works? I have a dataviz/infographic/GIS visualisation challenge that I'm coming to the realization I do not have the skills to adequately convey in a graphic, and am looking for some help.
Basically, I'd like to show what Syria (say) would look like with a robust MLAT-gathering network of Mode-S receivers in an isometric 3D representation, showing overlapping coverage cones, and the density of receivers needed for border or nationwide MLAT, if that makes any sense.
I picked Syria because the coverage in that area of the world isn't robust and we miss a lot of the aircraft coming in and out of the country, as well as neighbouring Iraq and Turkey.

I'm presuming the flight was conducted with journalists from multiple outlets simultaneously. (NBC, CNN, more?)
Before I explain to the #AusAirForce 🇦🇺 comms ppl, please appreciate that their P-8A Poseidon fleet broadcasts its own location to anyone who will listen, using ADS-B. That signal will geolocate them from orbit. On patrol, their locations are the least secret thing over the SCS.
This tweet, that has all the words in it you'd need to find it, gives you the tail numbers and ICAO Mode-S hexes of the whole #AusAirForce 🇦🇺 P-8A Poseidon fleet. You can follow them pretty much any day with the link that's included in the quoted tweet.
On 2023-02-09 #AusAirForce 🇦🇺 P-8A Poseidon A47-011 arrived at #KadenaAB 🇺🇸 on #Okinawa 🇯🇵as call sign #ASY150.

Here's a way you may not have looked at the data #ADSBexchange gives you.
Planes using ADS-B transmit their precise location (lat/lon/alt/speed/etc) but planes using Mode-S need to be geolocated using multilateration (MLAT). like TRIangulation, but with 4 data points (Multi) 🧵

Here is an image (and link) representing *only* planes being geolocated using MLAT. Meaning, 4 or more #ADSBexchange receivers have them in line-of-sight (LOS); 10 of them.

Here's what you do:
filter by altitude, between 10,000-40,000 ft, that restricts the results to aircraft which are flying high enough that we should home four or more receivers are in line of sight, a requirement for #MLAT.

Then filter so you only see the Mode-S-transponder-transmitting aircraft

They flew right through the #ADIZ that the media get their bloomers in a bunch about when the Russians fly antiques through, and VIOLATED American and Canadian airspace, which the Russians never do, and the Chinese continue to do; did I get that right? What a bunch of bullsh!t.
I suspect the #USAF are flying their own spy drones over China on the regular, without the public's knowledge, in full view of the Chinese military, and they're terrified the Chinese will start shooting them out of the sky if they shoot down the balloon.

If I start looking for where RCAF tankers were on 2022-04-01, we see the return flight by #4WingColdLake fighters from California, where they spend most of the winter because Cold Lake is.. well.. it's Cold, yo!

We can track them using the #ADSBexchange network of transponder receivers, despite their request to the FAA that nobody track their movements.

Not only can we identify the plane's departure and arrival time from Crete, that was #USAF RC-135W Rivet Joint 62-4126 #AE1253 using callsign #ZEUS21.

We also see very clearly the sensor being used is on the right hand side of the plane; they conduct the pass at ~370kn, turn around as fast as they can (~450kn+), and make another pass, three times. Their departure wasn't forced, they were done; they left at ~420kn; not that fast

The network of transponder receivers collects the data the plane is transmitting with an omnidirectional antenna. Any plane using ADS-B, like that one, only needs to be "heard" by one ground station and it's coordinates (from their transponder) relayed to #ADSBexchange.
The green circles show where receivers (which the operators of have opted to make their location public, like I have) are feeding the ADSBexchange network from.
🇨🇦 As part of today's #NORAD exercise, the part of the tanker will be played by #RCAF CC-150T 15004, now taxiing at #CYOW, showing the game is afoot.

Given the constant buzz of American ISR assets over Iraq, it's probably just one more, but the rest of them are pretty loud and proud about their identity. Already L3, Textron, and other contractors can be noticed operating over Iraq all night long, every night.
