ದಂತಕತೆ: ಸುದತ್ತಚಾರ್ಯನ ವಾಸಂತಿಕಾ ಮಂದಿರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಲಿ ಹೊಡೆಯಲು ತನ್ನ ಶಿಷ್ಯ ಸಳನಿಗೆ "ಹೊಯ್ ಸಳ" ಎಂದು ಆಜ್ನಾಪಿಸಿದನು.
ಇತಿಹಾಸ :ವಿಷ್ಣುವರ್ಧನನು ತಲಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಚೋಳರನ್ನು ಸೋಲಿಸಿದ ಸಾಧನೆ, ಹೋಯ್ಸಳರನ್ನು ಸಾಮಂತ ಪದವಿಯಿಂದ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಕಟ್ತುವ ವರೆಗೆ ಕೊಂಡೋಯ್ದಿತು.
