ಅಯ್ಯಾ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿಗಳು ಸುಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಮನೆತನದ ತಿರುಮಕೂಡಲು ನರಸೀಪುರದ ಸೋಸಲೆ ಎಂಬ ಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ 1854ರ ಮಾರ್ಚ್ 20ರಂದು ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಇವರ ಮೊದಲಿನ ಹೆಸರು ವೆಂಕಟಸುಬ್ಬುಶರ್ಮ. ತಂದೆ ಸೋಸಲೆ ಗರಳಪುರಿ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ತಾಯಿ ಸುಬ್ಬಮ್ಮನವರು.
ಮೈಸೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಟಕ ಸಂಘವೊಂದನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಹಲವಾರು ವರ್ಷ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಾಪಕರಾಗಿ ದುಡಿದು ವೃತ್ತಿ ರಂಗಭೂಮಿಯ ನಾಟಕ ಕಲೆಯನ್ನು ಪುನರುಜ್ಜೀವನಗೊಳಿಸಿದರು.ಸೋಸಲೆ ಅಯ್ಯಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿಗಳು ಹಲವಾರು ಗ್ರಂಥಗಳ ಪ್ರಕಟಣೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರು.
