Finished a great #zoomclass in the Sustainability and Environmental Change Minor here at @VUamsterdam today! What was supposed to be a 30min feedback session, turned into an 1.5 hour of in depth questions and great recommendations on how we can decrease our land footprint.
The students have shown good knowledge on what drives land use change, but were shocked at the impact of beef and dairy...especially cheese always disappoints them - particularly the Dutch students :) #justdutchthings
I was positively surprised on their willingness to change their diets to decrease their land, carbon and water footprint. And how disappointed they were in EU governments by not informing the citizens on the negative effects of the meat and dairy industry (also beyond EU borders)

On the first day of teaching my own summer class (Diplomacy and Int’l Relations), I came up with an icebreaker designed to get students to know each other’s names. (I didn’t want them to rely on the names on the Zoom screen.) It worked really well, so I’m sharing here. #ZoomClass
This will work with a small group (< 25). Ask all students to change their names in Zoom to only their last name. Go into gallery view and tell all students to unmute. One by one, spotlight each student. Tell students that when spotlighted, they should say their first name.
You can do rounds with people saying their names 2 or 3 times. Then tell everyone to mute (and if they are feeling worried about getting a name wrong, to cover their mouths with a hand). Do another round and tell everyone to try to say names of students out loud.

In a parallel universe, my 14 year old cousin who is now in 9th grade just had her first zoom class yesterday. She has to attend these for Maths, Physics and Social studies and the class goes on for 4 hours with breaks. Yesterday was her first class and this is what transpires-
While their 40 something and 50 YO teachers manage to connect to the call, most students take help of their parents to connect online. The initial 10 minutes go away in parents saying-"Lag gaya kya?Madam percentage sikha rahi hai kya? Arreh call mute karna hai kya"..
The class somehow commences. Now some teachers like their zoom class noisy (How?) & don't instruct for the kids to mute their calls. What one ends up hearing is all the family drama- from the vendor outside, to banging of utensils to the older/younger sibling throwing a tantrum
