Long thread warning:
Let's talk about this video's claim that we can "modernize City Hall's planning policies" and have "housing choice" while "stand[ing] up for single family zoning."

First, here's Calgary's R-1 zoning. In most of town (in orange), you can only build detached homes without Council approving a land use change. Our default doesn't allow much housing choice.

Now, let's talk about the ratio between the improvement (building) value and land value. A map of Calgary showing the lots on which only a detached h
For example, most people don't buy a lot for $5 and build a granite building or buy a lot for $1M and put up a tent. When the land is worth considerably more than the building, most people will change the building. R-1 zoning restricts their options.

This happens if you build more infrastructure than you can maintain and don't do the math to see how you'll replace it at the end of its life cycle.

Let's do some back of envelope math:
As of 1 Jan 2017, Calgary had $84.7B in infrastructure.

What's the ratio between our assessed value (private investment) and our infrastructure (public investment)?

Whether you use the values from six months before the infrastructure's assessed date ($303B), six months after ($311B), or an average ($307B), it's around 3.6:1.

@clmarohn in @StrongTowns, pg. 139.

Here is Calgary's neighbourhoods' productivity (based on 2020 assessed value/km2), sorted alphabetically.

Here is Calgary's neighbourhoods' productivity sorted by total productivity (highest to lowest). I find this far more interesting than Avenue Magazine's annual ranking of neighbourhoods.
If you want to know about the process, @Chealion sent me a spreadsheet with each neighbourhood's area (thanks!). A friend put this data set in python to add up the value of each property in each community. I combined the two.

This Tuesday is #UrbanAffairsBookClub @shelflifeyyc, and we're reading 'Building the Cycling City: the Dutch Blueprint for Urban Vitality' by @modacitylife. I liked this book so much, I decided to go through it again, and I'll be live-tweeting my experience!
#yycplan #yycwalk and #yycbike tweeps, feel free to follow along.
