27 MAY 1944 – BATTLE OF BIAK ISLAND BEGINS #WWII

As GEN Douglas MacArthur’s forces advanced towards the Philippines, they required airstrips which could accommodate heavy bombers. The airfields on Biak Island, at the western end of New Guinea, made the island a prime target. Image
On 27 MAY the 41st ID began its attack when the first wave landed as planned, but strong currents pushed follow-on units west of their designated beaches. The Japanese garrison was surprised and offered little early resistance.

The heat, thick vegetation, rugged terrain, and Japanese entrenched in caves in a 200-foot-high cliff slowed the U.S. advance, but 162d Infantry Regiment patrols had reached within 200yards of the airfields by the following morning.

No American story is more pitch-perfect for the combination of #MemorialDay & #AAPIHeritageMonth than that of the 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team, the all-Japanese American #WWII regiment that would by war's end become the most decorated unit in US military history.
The 442nd's more than 14,000 awards & honors include a posthumous Medal of Honor, awarded in March 1946 to Private Sadao Munemori for his heroic actions to save the lives of two fellow soldiers during heavy fighting along Italy's Gothic Line.
& as I write in my new @SatEvePost Considering History column, Munemori is just one of many Asian Americans who've received a posthumous Medal of Honor for their service & sacrifice. #twitterstorians

THREAD Re. today's expected flood of "Dear #Tito" tweets:

Do you agree or disagree with Ambassador Chip Bohlen’s statement that #Russia was unwilling to be a good neighbor in the global community after #WWII?

Did the Soviets start the #ColdWar, as Bohlen claimed?

Or was the West the aggressor?

Please comment below 👇🏼 Image
Declassified documents I’ve seen from both British and American intelligence indicate that WE were the aggressors.

OPERATION UNTHINKABLE shows us that even before the war was over, in April 1945, the Cold War had already begun — and Winston Churchill started it. Not Stalin!

As some of us celebrate the #Soviet victory over Nazism, let us remember the filthy role of the Canadian state, before, during and after #WWII. Prime Minister King, a vicious anti-Semite, was the most pro-appeasement leader in the British Empire, and was fond of Hitler Image
The Canadian state's interest in WWII was to use the war to whip up #nationalism and stamp out #socialist organizing at home, and to defend British #imperialism abroad. The Canadian state was happy to take on a founder of the Nazi Party, Otto #Strasser, as a political advisor. Image
Strasser's plan was to stage a #coup, so that the #Allies could cut a deal with the 'good Nazis.' But Strasser was a fraud, and only reluctantly, when no 'good Nazis' could be found to cut a deal with, did the Allies invade. The cream of the Nazi army was defeated by the #Soviets Image

On April 25, we remember the historic meeting of Soviet & American troops on the Elbe River. This day symbolizes the brotherhood-in-arms between the USSR & the U.S. that fought shoulder to shoulder against Nazi Germany during the Second World War. 78 years have passed since then. ImageImageImage
2. Soviet & American troops were moving towards each other, smashing the remains of the Third Reich from opposite directions. A meeting between the Allies was inevitable, and it finally happened on April 25 on the Elbe River. This remarkable event became known as #ElbeDay.
3. Every year people lay flowers to #WWII memorials in states–to the monuments to Soviet warriors in Los Angeles, to the sailors of the U.S. Merchant Marine in New York, to the heroes of the Alaska-Siberia air bridge in Fairbanks, to the tomb of the Red Army soldier in Seattle.

On 5 April 1945, Allied forces pushed across the Po River Valley, and, as German resistance crumbled, made rapid advances which ended with the surrender of the German forces in Italy on 2 May 1945.
#armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC
After another slow, arduous advance over rugged terrain, in poor weather, against a determined, well-entrenched, and skillful enemy, by April 1945 the superbly led and combat-hardened Allied 15th Army Group enjoyed overwhelming numerical superiority on the ground and in the air.
On the evening of 2 May, the 15th Army Group headquarters, commanded by General Mark Clark, transmitted the cease-fire orders throughout northern Italy, and the remaining Axis forces laid down their arms within the next forty-eight hours.

4 APRIL 1945 - NORTH APPENINES CAMPAIGN ENDS - #WWII

The long, arduous, and often frustrating campaign in Italy's northern Apennines Mountains that began on 10 Sep 1944 came to a successful conclusion on 4 Apr 1945.

Although derisively considered a "sideshow" by many historians, operations in Italy kept the enemy from sending reinforcements to oppose the main Allied effort in the drive across western Europe.

@USArmy @TRADOC
In Sep 1943, the 15th Army Group began the slow advance up the Italian peninsula. Resources originally intended for the Italian theater had steadily diminished in favor of supporting Operations OVERLORD and DRAGOON/ANVIL and the main effort of the direct advance toward Germany.

I don't think we talk enough about how Italy ran at least 16 concentration camps during #WWII where Mussolini ethnically cleansed Croatians, Slavs, and Jews. Italy really just tried to memory-holed their atrocities.
When the camps were shut down in 1943, the Jewish survivors who couldn't flee were shipped to Auschwitz 🙃
Like, how the fuck is Mussolini's party literally back in power in Italy and we're all acting like that's normal and okay? Image

18 MARCH 1945 - CENTRAL VISAYAS CAMPAIGN BEGINS - #WWII

Wie is die Bob Angelo, en wat maakt die prijs zo belangrijk? Wie winnen die dan? Dacht ik.
