These are #handwoven #silk #saris made in #Murshidabad in #Bengal in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Called ‘Baluchari’ sari as they were woven in the land near the river Bhagirathi which flows by Murshidabad. ‘Balu’ means ‘sand’ & ‘char’ means ‘bank’ in #bangla #language 
If you look carefully at these saris, they depict #European #soldiers with their #armsandweapons in their #traditional #costume they definitely caught the fascination of the local #weavers yesterday we saw the soldiers on #femple #terracotta and now on #textiles @MuseumBuddy

“Every few yrs,the govt ppl take our info & write something with chalk on the handlooms[ part of a handloom census]. What’s the use if they can’t even give us a good price for the cloth?”ask #weavers in Rendall village where the once thriving handloom industry has been decimated.
I won’t sell the handloom. I’ve spent my life at it,” says Vasant Tambe,1 of the village's 4 remaining weavers.He points to a loom that stands 7ft tall in the centre of his house, but he also broke his 2nd handloom to make a door frame. It leads to a world of that has faded away.

Maheshwar is a beautiful riverside town in Madhya Pradesh. In the 18th century, Ahilyabai Holkar, who ruled the princely state of Indore, promoted the tradition of hand #weaving here. Well over two centuries later, the town remains famous for its Maheshwari #sarees.
Btw 2012 & 2015, more than 200 weavers have migrated to Maheshwar due to the growing opportunities in its #handloom enterprises. This is unusual & contrary to the trend in a sector that is in steep decline.
It is also unusual that young people are among the weavers playing a pivotal role in reviving the #craft. They are an inspiration to the weaving community of this historic town. In this #film, the young #weavers tell their story: ruralindiaonline.org/articles/weave…
