Today, June 2, is also the birthday of Hadiya Pendleton. She would be 26 but died in the 2013 Harsh Park Chicago shooting, less than a mile from President Obama’s Chicago residence and just one week after performing in his inaugural events. 
Hadiya was a good student who loved books, enjoyed taking silly selfies with friends, played volleyball, and performed with her high school band. Hadiya was the only fatality in a mistaken identity gang-related shooting which injured 2 others.
The Wear Orange Gun Violence Awareness Program is an outgrowth of the reaction to her death. Because orange symbolizes safety for hunters, Hadiya’s friends & family wore orange to commemorate what should have been her 18th b-day. The movement has grown exponentially since then.
Jennifer Sharp is painfully aware of the dangers of an armed abuser. Both her mother, Cindy, and her daughter, Kaila, were shot & killed by intimate partners. Jennifer is wearing orange for the 70 women per month in the US whose lives are taken in this terrifying way. #WearOrange
Jennifer was inspired to join the gun violence prevention movement because she wanted to do something meaningful to honor the two women she loved the most. #WearOrange
“After searching in the dark for so long, I finally found where I belong,” Jennifer said. “I attended a support group, which was an amazing and uplifting experience. Speaking to other members with the same experiences has helped me immensely on my healing journey.” #WearOrange
Arry McNeill has not only endured the trauma of having a child taken by gun violence, her pain is compounded by the fact that her son’s shooting death remains unsolved. Today, she is wearing orange for Antonio and all those who live with unanswered questions. #WearOrange
“Every time I hear about a shooting, especially of a young person, I feel the pain of their parents like they are my own child,” Arry said. “The high rate of lives that families have lost breaks my heart.” #WearOrange

I'm the DC Chapter co-Lead of @MomsDemand. It's really a lot of work. There's a lot to do in this city and our advocacy is 2-fold. I'm gonna tell you about it. Because there are so many layers. And the past week has almost taken me out of this role.
3 years ago, my then-4 yo was in preK4 at the public school 2 blocks away. I was working full time and shootings were regular national AND local news stories. I was lamenting to a client that as Black Americans, my kids are 10x more likely to die by gun than their white peers.
At that time I didn't think my son was participating in active shooter drills. She told me he was; and she gave me the right words to ask him about it so I could know for sure. That day when picked him up I asked and cried as he gave me the answer I didn't know to assume.
Today is #CanadaDay and for many of us it is a day to reflect and mourn, to honour the survivors of the horrifying residential school system and remember the thousands of young Indigenous children who lost their lives due to neglect and abuse.

Every day, 96 Americans are killed by gun violence, and on average there are nearly 13,000 gun homicides every year. Americans are 25 times more likely to be killed with guns than people in other developed countries.
I recently signed the proclamation for National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Portland, and I encourage all citizens to support their local communities on efforts to prevent gun violence.
Anyone can join this campaign by pledging to Wear Orange on June 1st, the first Friday in June in 2018, to help raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors. #WearOrange

5 yrs ago at a meeting w/my constituents in Tucson, AZ, a troubled young man opened fire, injuring 12 & killing 6. I was shot in the head.
When I was shot, the bullet tore through the left side of my brain, an injury that is almost always fatal. Somehow, I survived.
