We Kenyans who are employed need to be honest with the public. Most of us are employed by luck. Employment is so constricted, that getting education and "experience" is simply betting and winning. It has little to do with competence. #maishakazini #mynetwork #toxicworkspaces
Many corporate communication execs worked in media houses first. That means that to get those jobs, you need to get your foot into one of the main media houses first. How many are they?

You can literally count them on your fingers. #maishakazini #toxicworkspaces #mynetwork
So if limited media houses already limit who can get corporate communication jobs, people who get them mistake that job for their competence. But actually, they were lucky to get the first media job that made them competent. #maishakazini #toxicworkspaces #mynetwork

Neoliberalism has weaponized "exposure," "passion" and "experience" to force people who don't have bargaining power to offer free labor, and to give class advantage to the rich.

It's only the rich who afford to pay rent, food and other necessities while their kids work for these non-monetary payments.

And anyway, rich kids don't work for free. Their parents are scratching each others' backs.

While they're playing golf, a CEO will ask a fellow CEO of a business his company does business with to give a kid or other relative an internship. That's how it works.

Many people say that the cornerstone of capitalist imperialism is profit. I would argue that it is not profit but alienation. By alienation, I mean the separation of who people are from their reality and their work.

Power and profit depend on that separation.

THREAD
Capitalism has then reduced education to training bureaucrats to facilitate that separation. That is why, if you notice, being in school is an experience of constant violence to prevent you from being in touch with your relatives, your humanity and reality.
The simplest example: remember what happened when you got sick in boarding school? The brutality that followed? The point is to teach you to ignore your personhood and your needs, to always worship and follow instructions even if it kills you doing it.

There is no area of life full of myths, propaganda, cliches and lies like education. People repeat falsehoods with such amazing authority, and refuse to see the contradictions when you point them out.

We're drunk on the lies.
Lie no 1: Education is for jobs.

Truth
Education is for life. Training is for jobs. Education lays the foundation to learn specific skills. All people need to communicate, create, collaborate and critically analyze. You don't get that from learning STEM in grade 1.
Lie no 2. All Kenyans go to uni to get employed

Fact
Studies show that up to 70% of Kenyan uni studemts eventually want to be self employed. They just need experience, capital and an enabling environment. If those were available, there would be very few graduates to employ.

If you hate theory, and think philosophy is useless, this post is not for you. Don't waste your time reading useless stuff. Go fix a tap or mix cement. Be relevant.

For the rest of us humans, this is a lesson in what is wrong with #competencybasedcurriculum
Now, when you jump with your kids, it's supposed to be spontaneous. Maybe you're playing a game. If you're a teacher, you want kids to have fun as they learn. If it's sports, you want to teach a particular skill. If it's with music, you want to teach dance.
The point is that you don't analyze the techniques and purposes of jumping, unless you are in college (TVET or Uni) taking a class in kinetics class or maybe physical therapy.

But from the picture from @KICDKenya documents, you will see that KICD has spoiled all the fun.

Thank you Kenyans for raising this issue, but surely, calling on the government to do something is really part of our problem.

GoK only knows how to issue orders. How does telling schools to open at 8am help? Kids wake up at 5 to reach at 8. citizentv.co.ke/news/photo-of-โ€ฆ
Any time you want to talk about education, you must go beyond the schools. Because education is one of those things. It's a micro-cosm of society itself. You can't have functional schools in a dysfunctional society.

What are the issues?
As some of you celebrate taking the SGR in 4 hours to your beach property, remember that those billions could have been used to make a public transit system that would make people leave their cars at home. Without traffic, kids wouldn't need to be on the road 3 hours in advance.
