1. Greatful to the @USCCB @bpdflores for facilitating today’s listening session with theologians on @Synod_va process (over 100 today) - I was very happy to see many friends from @theCTSA @CTStheology @ctewc - few lasting thoughts 1/7
2. I am filled with #gratitude for all the work that has gone into the #synod so far - while these listening sessions might have been organized earlier in the process, today’s event was well planned and facilitated
3. But where is theology in the #synod? The final North American report speaks a lot about the need for formation in synodality and even #Catholicsocialteaching (awesome!) but no mention of theologians or Catholic higher education - natural instruments for this formation

"For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God." (Eph. 5:5; see also 1 Cor. 6:9-10; Gal. 5:19-22; 1 Tim. 1:8-11; Heb. 13:3; Rev. 21:8; 22:15).
One of the primary objections to this "radical inclusion" Cardinal McElroy talks about is that it involves dispensing with the universal call to holiness – you know, that thing the most recent ecumenical Council of the Church spoke about at length in ch. 5 of «Lumen Gentium»...!
"Thus it is evident to everyone, that all the faithful of Christ of whatever rank or status, are called to the fullness of the Christian life and to the perfection of charity; by this holiness as such a more human manner of living is promoted in this earthly society." (LG 40)

1/ I've responded 2x today to #Catholics whose shared premise seems to be that outward performance & practice is a good measure of the #CatholicChurch's success.

And I think this pathology sits deep in the church—

2/ 'If people fulfill their obligation & show up, the #CatholicChurch is successful.'

I think this approach to inner spiritual conversion as a factory production problem needs serious, sustained attention.

So much of our #Catholic life is built to produce this attitude.
3/ All the incentives & structures of diocesan churches point that way—Oct counts, collection totals, school headcounts, etc. are perceived measures of vitality.

They're not.

They leave wholly unconsidered the question of whether #Catholics are converted by the Gospel.

Really excellent stuff from Fr Leon Pereira, O.P., on the #synod and the #ListeningChurch: "It is the grievous failure to be authentically pastoral and genuinely loving."
H/T @sitsio, on whose blog the video of the full homily can be found (well worth it!):
@sitsio And a written version of this homily can be read at english.op.org/torch/a-god-in…

This is incredibly childish and I can't believe I'm needing to clarify this.... @SewellMartin is lying. Again. Mr Sewell has referenced me and my case constantly in the last few weeks - after he blocked me. He's now trying to claim I blocked him - I haven't. Screenshot proof here ImageImage
I am not harassing anyone and I have never persecuted @MartynPercy. Mr Sewell is trying to characterise my justified critique of his petition as 'Oxford folk' 'pressuring' those who sign. This is not true. @SewellMartin please stop.
@SewellMartin is a General Synod Member for the @churchofengland. Another excellent example of why we need proper codes of conduct and accountability for @synod members.

This morning in Rome, @Pontifex presided over a "Moment of Reflection" in preparation for the official opening of "the synodal Journey" tomorrow.

"The Synod," said Francis, presents "a great opportunity for a pastoral conversion in terms of mission and ecumenism..." 1/4
However, said @Pontifex, the #Synod "is not exempt from certain risks," including "formalism", "intellectualism", and "complacency".

Invoking the Holy Spirit, Francis prayed: "keep us from becoming a 'museum Church', beautiful but mute, with much past and little future." 2/4
@Pontifex also quoted Fr. Yves Congar (below, with a young Fr. Ratzinger), a progressive Dominican peritus (theological expert) at Vatican II, who "once said: 'There is no need to create another Church, but to create a different Church' (True and False Reform in the Church)." 3/4
