Boy oh boy are there a lot of cops out on the roads leading in to Melbourne CBD this morning. Saw two big roadblocks on a short bike around the outskirts this morning #Melbourne #melbourneprotest. Livestreams from #sydneylockdown #sydneyprotest also showing heavy police presence.
Some protesters have suggested using Waze to mark police presence for each other.
The plan in Melbourne seems to be to walk in from nearby places like Richmond or South Yarra.

When I attended the march back in April, the beauty was the sheer diversity of people in attendance (as I wrote about at the time).
June and July was the same. You don’t attract a diverse crowd like that by focusing on niche topics — you do it by targeting key central themes.

I was there when protesters were pepper sprayed at Central Station on Saturday night. I want to clarify what happened as details have been misrepresented.
The first and most important being the NSW Police’s assertion that the use of pepper spray was “appropriate”.

Below is what I saw.
When I arrived at Central Station at 6.17pm, protesters were at the entry to platforms 16 to 25 chanting “no justice, no peace” and “too many cops, not enough justice,” using walls and the sides of bins to create noise.

Police then funnelled the group inside the building by forming an impenetrable line. Police also surrounded the Surry Hills Eddy Avenue exit.
Space became confined, tensions rose.
At 6.28, a protestor with a megaphone asked everyone to take a knee to diffuse the situation.
