A shout out to passengers on @Fly_Norwegian flight D82766 from Helsinki to London, diverted to Copenhagen on 18.02.22 because of #stormEunice. If you consider a complaint against the airline, get in touch. For everyone else, here is the story. (1)
9 am on 18.02 @Fly_Norwegian captain on flight D82766 announces there is going to be a bumpy ride en route to London bc of the storm. On approach to #Gatwick the plane makes 2 landing attempts in extreme turbulence, circles around South Downs & is then diverted to Copenhagen (2)
Having spent 5 hrs in the air, passengers, many of whom kids, then are left in the aircraft for another two hours while @Fly_Norwegian tries to sort out what to do with them all. No food, drinks, help are offered. (3)

So, how did our structures fare against #StormEunice? And what can we learn from that?

Starting in the Stone Age... 🧵
The big Horton house looks almost untouched, apart from a few stray bits of thatch. A Stone Age community living in a house like this may actually have been less disrupted by a big storm than many modern families dealing with power cuts were yesterday! #StormEunice
The outbuildings didn't fare so well, though. These will need patch repairs, although in a pinch the gaps could be covered with skins for temporary waterproofing. #StormEunice

We have declared a major incident in response to the volume of 999 calls being taken about #StormEunice related incidents. Firefighters are still meeting the needs of our communities, but declaring a major incident allows us to focus our resources. orlo.uk/OLoBY
We've introduced batch mobilisation, meaning calls where there is a risk to life are prioritised and crews then attend other calls as non-emergencies when they can. Control took 550 calls between 1030 and 1300 – more than the average number usually taken in a 24-hour period.
Control has taken a number of unhelpful calls, including to a trampoline which was blowing around in a garden. Please listen to our advice and only call 999 if there is an emergency or if there’s an immediate risk to life so crews can respond to people who really need our help

What is a ‘#stingjet’? The jets get their name from their resemblance to the sting in a scorpion’s tail, spotted as they develop on satellite images, where the end of the so-called cold conveyor is marked by a hook-shaped cloud with a point at the end.

A strong jet stream can generate a new storm every day or two as
a narrow, focused region of extremely strong winds embedded within the larger area of strong winds and lasting just a few hours, potentially in #StormEunice #stingjet #wxtwitter.

⚠️Storm Eunice is set to be the worst in over 30 years, meteorologists have warned, as scientists said a rare “sting jet” similar to the one seen during the Great Storm of 1987 might hit the UK

🌧️But what exactly is a sting jet? We asked the Met Office 👇
telegraph.co.uk/news/2022/02/1… Image
❓What is a sting jet?

🌬️ A sting jet is a small area of very intense winds (often 100mph or more) that can sometimes form in powerful weather systems crossing the UK Image
➡️Relative to the size of the storm, the sting jet is narrow, often 30 miles across, and only lasts three to four hours.

Regardless, with gusts of wind exceeding 100mph the Met Office says there is clearly still the risk of damage Image

Storm Eunice is likely the most devastating storm in decades. New forecast models predicted it 5 days ago. The same models predict more severe storms over Europe with global warming, with sting jets prominent. @EngineeringNCL @metoffice #StormEunice link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Day 3 of #Omicron symptoms was my worst so far, with fatigue & a very heavy head, alongside sneezing. My tight chest, feeling of reduced lung capacity and tickly lung sensation had subsided slightly, as did the coughing, that had become painful on Day 2 #Oximeter down to 96%...
...so I slept a lot on Day 3.

But now it's 1am on Day 4 and I feel full of life. Fatigue gone. No more headache. Slight wheeze still, Oximeter 96%; no appetite, but sense of smell and taste are fine.

Wonder whether the worst is over, as I'm double AZ-jabbed plus Pfizer-boosted?
I can't find evidence of people relapsing into worsening symptoms post-Day 3, but my lungs are my weakness... Am I good right now because I slept so much over the last 3 days?

Tomorrow I begin my participation in the @UniofOxford #Molnupiravir (antiviral) trial.

📙#38/100 'Northern Lights' by @PhilipPullman

What an incredible story, and what a treat to read it as a 29 year old who just moved to Oxford!

I can't wait to read the rest of the trilogy, they're already in the post 👌
📙#39/100 Issue 233 of the
@parisreview

It's great to read ~250 pages of words by people I've never heard of, and to be introduced to ideas and works outside my usual scope.

I particularly enjoyed 'Violets' by @Bud_Smith & 'The Juggler's Wife' by Emily Hunt Kivel in issue 233.
📙#40/100 'Nine Lives' by @DalrympleWill

Impartial & articulate look at sacred vs profane in India. Most fascinating are insights into how religion can underpin unequal social structures, or be the vehicle through which they are legitimately, albeit temporarily, scorned.

#28 'Americanah' by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

This book asks profound questions about 'home', about what cultures expect - or demand - of people born into or outside of them, and how the backdrops of our lives can define the things we value, notice, and think about most.
#29 'The Hobbit' by J.R.R. Tolkien

A perfect adventure with gold, dragons, goblins, wizards, magic, peril, treasure, and morals. I wish I'd had this read to me as a kid because the various songs and scrapes lend themselves perfectly to that.

Book and author are both badass. Image
#30 'The Eden Express' by Mark #Vonnegut

An eloquent & deeply human account of his descent into psychotic mania, two relapses, and eventual long-term health.

A @nytimesbooks review nailed it: "Required reading for those who want to understand insanity from the inside." Image
