On 25 Jan 2022, Japan released the second in its "Record of Nature" #stamps series. This issue depicts images from a set of 6 scrolls, dating from 1834, titled 禽鏡 (Kinkyo), in which there are 300 paintings of more than 200 #birds.

2. The scrolls are the work of the Edo-period Japanese novelist, Takizawa Bakin (1767-1848), who had his son-in-law, the painter Atsumi Kakusyu, paint the birds, adding his own commentary around them. Puctured is Bakin's portrait by the ukiyo-e artist, Utagawa Kunisada.

3) During the Spanish Civil War, both sides issued postage stamps. As one might expect, they usually commemorated things dear to the hearts of each. Remembering Lepanto was obviously meant to inspire the Nationalist troops. A few months later, Madrid fell and the war was over.
Novice ??s: gifted box of stamps a friend’s non-collector mom clipped from the late 50s-1970. Mostly Germany & Austria, w/12 covers. Don’t collectors now prefer covers to loose stamps? Likely no real value in any of it. Keep covers? Soak off stamps? Do what I want who cares? Thnx

Finds from that box. I collect Judaica so will check “Jewish sounding” last names of folks I don’t know. Albert Ballin (1957 West German stamp), Jewish shipping magnate basically invented the cruise industry but sadly killed himself when business faltered. wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Ba…
India is very rich and diversified in regards of avifauna. It is home to many beautiful and unique endemic bird species. These birds have a great impact on Indian culture. The idea of depicting birds on the postage stamps of India is very old. #stamps #philately #thursdaymorning
The very first bird that appeared on Indian stamps was a postal carrier pigeon, which appeared on the 2-annas and 14- annas stamps of 1 October 1954. This was followed by the 1966 Children’s Day stamp, again depicting a symbolic pigeon, this time representing an apostle of peace.
In later years many other birds like Pitta, Monal, Oriole, Flycatchers, Parakeets, Woodpecker, Pipit, Babbler, Storks, Eagles etc have been depicted on postage stamps in India. Now, more than 100 bird stamps have been issued in India including endemic and migratory birds both.

Led a hike in the San Joaquin Marsh this afternoon. Brought my usual number of cameras but took fewer pictures than I had last week at Bolsa Chica. The weather was hot. Cool breezes blew across the ponds. I drank...
...all of my ice water. There were plenty of birds. The green around the ponds was surprisingly vibrant making it easy to see birds such as egrets and an Ibis. My group noted that there were far too few benches...
...where we could rest from the heat at the north end of the sanctuary. I decided to cut the hike short, omitting a whole loop around several of the ponds. No one protested.
In 1937, my grandfather, a philatelist living in #India, bought this "George VI Series, 1937" presentation booklet. In the late '70s, he gave it to me as a budding young collector. The stamps inside have seen the light of day only half a dozen times in 80+ years.

So, while we are resting on the #FBPE-laurels after a hot chase of #WATON, a few very preliminary thoughts on #Brexit and #genre. As my handle indicates, I came to #Twitter with an intent to talk about genre #research, but I have ended up talking about Brexit instead. 1/
Or is that indeed "instead"? A central finding of #genrestudies is that #genre is well nigh omnipresent in human culture, cognition, and communication. Thus, we think, react, and act in genre patterns, and we all have a surprising aptitude for understanding and using genre. 2/
