In this 2020 episode of the excellent podcast Social Science Bites - @socscispace - brilliant Sociolinguist, Professor Ruth Wodak, discusses the rise of far-right populism across Europe, & more importantly, what we might do about it.

Depending on your views, far-right populism can represent a welcome return to the past , or a worrying one. The former, Wodak argues, is one of the hallmarks of far-right populism – a yearning for an often mythical past where the “true people” were ascendant and comfortable.
Wodak terms this blurred look backward #retrotopia, “a nostalgia for a past where everything was much better,” whether it was ever real or not.

Wodak, who to be clear finds herself worrying and not welcoming, offers host David Edmonds a recipe for becoming a far-right populist.

I had a journalist actually tell me they had to "tread lightly" on the government because that is where they get all their stories from. Govts & #DOJ/#FBI/@UKSFO/@TheFCA master manipulators using leaks and quid-pro-quo's to 'mainstream' lies. #Libor a great example.
There will be more to this story to add as my case moves along. @business (Bloomberg) had my indictment and spoke about it while it was STILL SEALED. I was in #DOJ/#FBI custody, AWAITING indictment to be unsealed (so I could read it) while it was discussed on air. 100% illegal.
This #DOJ/#FBI leak in my #deutschebank #Libor case caused all senior executives to clam up tighter than a frogs ass. That allowed govt to target the junior #scapegoats with impunity because they could then suppress evidence/truth that came out AFTER trial

I started playing #guitar in college. Some of my friends back home played, so I thought I'd learn. It's been years since I kept up with it. With no job and an empty house, I had time. Plus, I could crank up my amp. Ava would have hated it. All the more reason to do it.

Strumming a few chords or playing a riff through a loud amp usually makes me feel better. It's more of a distraction this time. My amp is a little old. Even a #ragpicker might pass on it. "If you're not going to play it, sell it," Ava nagged. Life always got in the way.

Or I got in the way. Not even ten years ago I kept getting sick all the time. Painful stomach cramps would radiate weakness throughout my body. I learned how to wash it away like healing #rainwater. That's when I really started to figure out who I was and what I could do.
